Here's a Cardinal Coach Speak featuring Anderson. It would be pretty stupid to evaluate his potential as a DC based on a two-minute vid clip. I will note that he's described in the video as a very hard worker, always going over game film. He's also a Harbaugh hire from the USD days, so he and Shaw have  been on the same staff a long time.

He does seem pretty clearly to be the next man up, but I also wouldn't be shocked if he's promoted to "only" co-defensive coordinator and someone else is brought in from outside.

Yes, I think so. But Diaz runs a 4-3 and we're a 3-4 team, so that doesn't seem like a great fit.

A random outside name I wouldn't mind seeing getting pursued -- Utah State's Todd Orlando. I was really impressed by the way his defense shut down Jordan Lynch; he's their safeties coach, so he could fill the open DBs spot. And he's a longtime DC, albeit at the non-AQ level, so there's some experience there as well.

What about Clancy Pendergast?  He did a great job at USC last year and is looking for a job since Sark brought Wilcox with him.  He knows the Pac 12. Cal took a nosedive last year without him and USC defense was amazingly improved with him.  He runs a 5-2. Don't know how different that is from a 3-4 since our OLB's often acted like DEs.

His baggage is pretty heavy (he reportedly struck a player, lied about it, tried to cover it up, etc. ), so I don't see a head BCS job opening up for the guy--unless he does something to rehab his image, like take a high-profile(ish) gig at the collegiate level.

I'm sure many on this board would rather pass on somebody with that in his past, and it might also be a bad idea for football reasons (can an older DC defend the modern spread attacks? He's 57.).

I would've gone with outrage over the Diaz suggestion, but Shaw occasionally snags coaches from bad organizations and proceeds to reinvent them. 59er fans hated their special teams under Pete Alamar; with Shaw, Alamar's coaching the best special teams in the conference. Tarver (with the 49ers) and Bloomgren (with the Jets) hailed from dysfunctional pro organizations before coming to Palo Alto. Based on the evidence, you wouldn't be wrong to just assume whomever Shaw hires will work out.

Diaz fits perfectly into the Alamar mold, anyway. Diaz was well regarded before coming to Texas, and even piloted a good defense his first year there. But the Mack Brown rot scuttled the ship; it doesn't seem implausible that, while working for a better coach, he magically looks much better.

On another note, I must say I lost my innocence on this one.  I truly believed Mason when in December he said he wasn't ready to leave Stanford.
