The differential between "explosive plays" and "big plays" suggests to me we've been successful at re-incorporating the intermediate game ... at the cost of effectiveness to our vertical game.

My answer would be Yes and NO . . .
the intermediate game is back.  But the relatively weaker running game does seem to bet letting safeties get deeper.  ON several plays against UW we had deep plays but Hogan checked down to intermediate routes--successfully.  My presumption, as deep routes were off screen, is that our receivers were not able to break open.  As our receivers are fast, this implies deep safety coverage.

I would take a few more INTs if they are made way down field.  The thing about throwing deep is sometimes you throw to an area and the receiver has to find a way to separate, get to the ball, and make a play.  The QB can throw a guy open, and there is always a great chance of PI being called, especially in the Pac-12.  Hogan doesn't seem to have the confidence to throw to covered receivers deep, or his coaches have instructed him not to throw unless a guy is wide open. 

I've seen and heard of way too many instances of Hogan missing completely wide open receivers, so his field vision can also be called into question.

One thing I hope is that Shaw and co. realize that their preferred approach to scoring points isn't working, and they abandon some things they really don't want to get away from doing, and take some risks doing things they are less comfortable doing, in the name of achieving different outcomes.
