Costello, Robinson, and Butler are California natives with 4+ GPAs.  They are the quintessential Stanford men.  I could try to put together an argument that it wasn't such an achievement to land Costello and Robinson because kids like them are destined to come to Stanford.  But it's hard to remember many examples of elite California recruits with 4+ GPAs as a basis for comparison.  I'm sure there were other years with 1 (Bobby Okereke, Frank Buncom), but I certainly don't remember a year with 3.  Who are the ones who came to Stanford and who are the ones who went elsewhere?

Thanks for the responses.  I hadn't considered other sports, but it makes sense to do that.

In football, St. Brown does seem like a good counter-example to the hypothesis.  So, kudos to the staff for landing some great recruits in this class.

St. Brown had the grades through junior year.  If he actually wanted to attend Stanford, all he had to do was take some APs.  He decided not to do that, which means he was planning to go elsewhere.  Initially that was U$C or UCLA, but that changed to USB when the first two choices didn't work out.  But the main point (for purposes of my hypothesis, which I didn't necessarily believe from the start) is that you can't assume an elite California recruit with a 4+ GPA in junior year is going to pick Stanford.

By the way, it will be interesting to see how Rosen's career develops (especially in comparison to Chryst and Costello).  Obviously a lot of stuff can happen that could not be anticipated (injuries for example), but we'll get to see how good Shaw's instincts are.

If Shaw decided Rosen was never going to be a good enough quarterback inherently, then we're likely to get an answer. If Shaw decided there was something about Stanford and Rosen that didn't fit well together ... well we'll not be directly testing that hypothesis.

It's been reported here and elsewhere that the concern was his attitude.  So you could interpret that two ways.  One is that a bad attitude and lack of leadership would be poisonous no matter where he went.  The other is that it would be a particular liability at Stanford, where the players have to buy into the "blue collar" mentality.

He didn't do himself any favors with his appearance on ESPN's Elite 11 special, you'll recall. Trent Dilfer and the other coaches openly questioned whether or not he would be able to learn a college system, not because he wasn't smart enough, but because he would think he knew better than the coaches. That scene explained everything to me.

One note about high school GPAs. So a recruit could have a 4.0, but that only tells you part of the story.
