And our apparent starting safeties were recruited as quarterback and a wide receiver....eep.
Converting QBs and WRs to defensive back has worked out well for us in the past-- Richard Sherman, John Lynch, Tim Smith, Vaughn Bryant.

And most recently, Howell and Thomas (Thomas was listed as an athlete, but I believe was a QB, and Howell was an RB, I think). This doesn't' seem uncommon, I assume related to the fact lots of guys play two ways in high school.

Since Harbaugh came to Stanford, only 3 DBs, Bernard, Amanam, and Pippens, have actually returned as a 5th year senior.Â
Most DBs played as true freshmen. Lyons and Reynolds redshirted only due to injury. Terrence Brown, who left with a year of eligibility remaining, and Taijuan Thomas, were the only other voluntary redshirts until last year. That's a total of 5 voluntary redshirts in the 7 recruiting classes from 2007-2013.
The point is that DBs come to college ready to contribute. They probably redshirt less frequently than any other position. And the guys that Stanford got last year came even more college resdy than most. Meeks is the son of a DB coach. Reid is the brother of an NFL safety. Edwards is just a beast. Barring injury, all of these guys are likely to leave after 4 years even if they don't redshirt. So may as well play them.
We also recruited 8 (or 9?) DBs the last two years, and will be getting another 4+ this year. We do not lack DB prospects.
