Cougs didn't Coug it. Stopped a two point conversion on a late Iowa State TD, and then got a couple of first downs (by throwing the ball) to seal the game.

It was funny listening to the announcer yak about how Leach should run to kill the clock, and act surprised when he passed. Gotta know the Pirate would keep playing it his way.

Interesting that the Cougs were outgained by nearly 200 yards and still won the game.
Iowa State's three turnovers perhaps led to that.

Along with questionable TO's and decision on 4th and 2 from Coug 5 to opt for 3, as opposed to going for it. Campbell showed some inexperience in his decision-making, IMO.
This would have been a classic Coug'd game, except this time it was on Iowa State's part.

Whatever you think of the Pirate personally, you have to admit he did a pretty darn good job of coaching this year.
Going into the season, he had lost his DC, his top two QB's and several additional top players.
Despite this, he goes 11-2 on the season.
Now all he has to do is figure out how to beat his cross state rival.
(Actually Wazzu should feel lucky he is eccentric, or he would have been hired away by now).

I would also add he was very lucky that Minshew was as good as he turned out to be. I am sure coaching helped, but no way was it a sure thing he would be that good. He really did come out of nowhere. Leach was able to recognize he could help, but even Leach couldn't have known how well it would work out. Next year, with a different QB, we may see more of a regression to the mean.

Minshew ain't coming back, but a lot of the other Coug starters are.
So if the Pirate can get the right QB, they will be tough again.
Who would have thought ten years ago, when we beat the Cougs something like 57-0, they would turn out to be the one team in the conference we don't seem to be able to beat.

I love him because he is so different from the 99% of coaches who come from a cookie cutter. My second favorite team.

It appears, at least to some extent, that he isn't sold on any of them. That may be why he is looking at a graduate transfer. My expectation is that most graduate transfers will not work out. It is a rare guy that can step into a new system, get on the same page as his receivers, and have a great year. That makes Minshew's performance even more remarkable. Can Leach strike gold twice in a row? We shall see. I don't think Wimbush is that guy. Maybe someone else will be. Chemistry will be critical to success. (Also not being murdered by the other six guys on the roster).

So he had 7 QBs on the roster this year?! The mind boggles at the possibilities — the Pirate could have played all 7 of them, with 4 WRs and NO linemen. That’s probably the Hot Potato version of the Air Raid.

What a great finish to an unreal season for Wazzu. The Pirate deserves national Coach of the Year honors. I can only imagine how devastated the program was when Hilinski committed suicide. I'd have considered any .500 or better season a big success.
The end of the game indicated to me that Iowa State's coaching staff went to the ShawVita school or timeout & clock management. But at least they weren't substituting players in their 2-minute offense with the clock running. Maybe they didn't get to that lesson.

The Pirate was the perfect hire for the Cougs.
A guy who could win there, but with enough baggage so he wouldn't be immediately hired away when he did so.
Kudos to whoever made that decision.

For Pac-12 bowl games, I had only WSU and Stanford winning. Wish the news were better. I don't think MSU will lose to Oregon. Wash won't beat tOSU. Despite our players out for the Sun Bowl, I still think we'll win.
