I think I overestimated how good CB would be; Adebo had multiple sub-par games, Eboh did not work out, and Kyu Blu was inconsistent (as might be expected from a true frosh). Overall, the defense did maybe one standard deviation worse than I thought they would.

My biggest miss was at DL.  I said we were "strong".  In fact, the D-line was, at best, average.  I was rather disappointed by how they performed this year.  To some extent, it is hard to differentiate from the problems at ILB, but I don't think we were generating enough pressure on QB's (we had 27 sacks this year, down from 36 last year, and the fewest since 2009.  Likewise 71 TFL's is no better than last year, and again, there haven't been fewer TFL's since 2009.

What I find interesting about this list is the injury concentration in position groups. While the OL has been decimated, the WR, TE and DL position groups have largely been untouched.  If the absence of Turley is the cause of injuries, why are some position groups healthy and others unhealthy?  My theory is that injuries are mostly random and we had bad luck for them to concentrate in the areas where we had the least amount of depth (OL and ILB). That is an inconvenient theory for message boards as there is no one to point fingers at.

I will not be reflecting the portal folks on the 2019 personnel list. Powell is the only player no longer on the roster. I am wondering why only him, and when he left.

Powell was technically on the team all season, but injured.

Nobody left the team during the season, AFAIK. Some injured guys like Powell have had one foot out the door (especially if out for the season), but were still on the team. Let's ignore the portal stuff for the time being here. Hmmmm, that's interesting. Wondering if/when the other portal guys commit somewhere else, will they be taken off the roster too?

I do know that Powell had a season-ending setback during his injury recovery around the middle of the season. It's possible he started visiting other schools and whatnot at that point, and was therefore removed from the roster.

Walk-On Union Watch. My continued slow roll-out of Stanford's last game of the season... Eight non-scholarship players got PT against the Irish. At some point in the many coming weeks and months of no Stanford football, I'll do some sort of post mortem on redshirt appearances this season.

• S Spencer Jorgensen, fr. He played in his tenth game on ST. He did not record a tackle.
  
• P Alex Gracey, so. He again served as the holder for field goals and extra points. He played in every game this season.
  
• TE TaeVeon Le, so. He played in his second game of the season, probably on ST. He did not record a reception or tackle.
  
• DE Dylan Boles, jr. He played in his fifth game of the season, presumably on defense. He did not record a tackle.
  
• OLB Thunder Justice Keck, jr. He did not record a tackle in his tenth appearance of the season, I'm assuming on ST.
  
• TE Kyle McCombs, jr. He did not record a reception in his fifth appearance of the season; he played offense, not sure about ST.
  
• OLB Caleb Phillips, jr. He played in all twelve games this year on ST. He scored a tackle against ND.
  
• WR Harry Schwartz, sr. He did not record a reception in his second appearance of the season, and most assuredly his last career appearance. Great work, Harry!

• WR Brycen Tremayne, a sophomore former walk-on, played in his twelfth game, on ST and O. He had a 5-yard TD reception, and also a tackle. Incredibly, all three catches this season for Brycen were for touchdowns! I wonder if he has a specialization in the offensive scheme...
  
• S Noah Williams, a junior former walk-on, played in his tenth game, and recorded two tackles. He played on defense and ST, I think.
  
• S J.J. Parson, a senior former walk-on, played in his tenth game, on defense. He recorded two tackles in what may have been his last game; thanks for helping patch up the coaches' recruiting blunders at safety, J.J.!
  
• ILB Ryan Beecher, a fifth-year former walk-on, did not record a tackle on defense. He played in all twelve games this season. Thanks for all your work over the years, Ryan, and especially for helping an undermanned ILB position group this season. Best wishes to you!
