Yep we're on the same page then. I'm not counting the LDS guy as he's effectively '22, hence just 1 new signee for this coming season.

I don't think it's meant as more than that one. Technically, guys who aren't asked to come back for a fifth year and don't play football elsewhere also "retire" because their football playing career is done.

I don't think it's meant as more than that one. Technically, guys who aren't asked to come back for a fifth year and don't play football elsewhere also "retire" because their football playing career is done.

Got it, thanks. In the old days (before the transfer portal), that would be the outcome, but with the availability of the transfer portal, they may get an opportunity to earn a graduate degree and play one more year, even if playing at Stanford is not an option.

given it looks like there might be 2 scholarships (pending more retirements) and that there are still 12 players in the portal I would guess that Shaw has told the few he wants back that they might have a scholarship next year and told the rest thanks for your contribution

Not knowing who is inclined to stay and is more exploring their options vs. committing to leave the program, I'd prioritize Swann & Williams.

Was there ever an announcement that Ryan Sanborn and Brock Jones are on scholarship? I believe that both of them were described as preferred walk-ons initially.

If he's not on athletic scholarship (e.g. if his family is paying for everything), he wouldn't count against the scholarship limit. Do we know whether Jones is on athletic scholarship?

I do wonder why they did not give them both scholies from the outset, but there must have been some reason for waiting until the football season started. My *guess* is that, in the case of Jones, it was protection against him going pro in baseball or deciding to focus on baseball alone. And my guess, in the case of Sanborn, is also that they wanted to ensure that he was still better than Gracey at the commencement of the season; don't want to spend two scholies on punters.

There was no announcement. I think we found out from Bob because he knows all. But it happened once the season started.
I did notice Gracey's absence, too. (I will update chart when I get a chance.) Perhaps, knowing he will for sure never punt, decided to focus on his studies. He wasn't the greatest holder, I don't think. I wonder who it will be. Jack West? Or even Sanborn, perhaps?
