First off, it's great to have college basketball again after the year we've had
I know the rest of the season is still very much up in the air, given the worsening COVID situation in the country, but I hope that it stabilizes to the degree that we can complete a season and send Kiana, Anna and Alyssa off on our last deep postseason run.
I agree with the sentiment from this game. We've overmatched Cal Poly in pretty much every facet so it was hard to truly gauge how ready the team is until we play a tough opponent, but for a first game, it was a joy to watch.
I think the depth and quality of this team will make Kiana an even better and more consistent player. I felt that she was pressing too often last season with Haley and DiJonai being out to create something and be the go-to player in every clutch situation, resulting in some ugly shooting nights. Haley showed that she can effectively share the mantle.
Regarding Cameron, we didn't see too much of her shooting prowess today, but we all know her family connections with the Currys, if even some of their talent has rubbed off on her, given the impressive collegiate debut she had, she and Haley will make a formidable, (dare I say it -- All-American) duo for the next three years.
Van Gytenbeek's passing skills was very impressive, finding the open player down the court and not hesitating to make those decisions. Coupled with the ability and desire to hit jumpers (unlike some other PGs we had in recent memory), it will definitely soften the loss after this year from Kiana's graduation.
Emma's debut was exactly what I felt like she would be as a player. The hustle and grit from the get-go, she might not put up brobdingnagian numbers, but I think she's going to be the indispensible player who's exactly where you need her to be, making the big play, going after the loose rebound, that helps you win not only games, but championships.
I agree that Hannah will be an absolute thorn in opposing defenses to game plan for, if she develops the game we saw today. If she can show what she did today on a consistent basis, defenders can't just cheat on the 3-point line against her, which will make her shooting just that more potent.
I was just thinking it is an embarrassment of riches on how deep the team is. The lineup that we fielded in the fourth quarter would be competitive against most teams in the country.
