Well, if we wanted a test for our freshmen, we sure got one. Yepifanova knocked off the #1 seed, and her reward is fellow freshman Jessica Alsola of Cal. Yepifanova was a top 2 recruit her entire high school career, and she’s got the national titles and big time results that whole time to warrant it. While Alsola didn’t really make a splash until her junior year, her star really started to rise the past year, and she peaked at #2 in the recruiting rankings, right where Yepifanova has been the whole time. I was disappointed with Blake’s result against her, and not just for Blake, but for what it means for our team this year. Alsola probably slides into #2 singles behind Giavara, pushing Rosenqvist to #3, Ivanov to #4, Bui to #5, and Viller Moeller to #6. That’s such a deep lineup, and if we want to regain the upper hand over Cal, we need our 2 to beat their 2.
It’s early, but I think if Gordon doesn’t play, then Yepifanova is our #2 behind Ma, pushing Blake to 3, sliding in Xu at 4, Geller going from 3 to 5, and Choy playing 6. That’s a much improved lineup over last year, but is it better than Cal? We got a discouraging data point from the Blake loss today, but we could get an encouraging one tomorrow with a Yepifanova win.
And in the other semifinal, no big deal, just a freshman against a 5th year, top 50 player. Connie Ma against Kozyreva should be a terrific one, and I can’t wait to see it.
