Bump please. I mean, it’s better than talking about Stanford football….
Outside Topic Giants/Niners 2021 thread
Stanford alum Austin Slater made $1.15 million in 2021. Spotrac is estimating $2.25 million for him this year. He had a terrific 2020 and a mediocre 2021. Still, he had a great September, and he had the second highest OPS in the playoffs (1.000) apart from Kris Bryant (1.147). Would have been nice to see Slater play more in the playoffs. Bryant and Posey were terrific, La Stella and Crawford were okay. Slater played great.
Literally everyone else was terrible. Yastrzemski (0-13), Ruf (1-11), Solano (0-8), Dickerson (0-4), Flores (1-12), Duggar (0-3), Casali (0-1), Wade (1-10), Longoria (2-17). Collectively, they had five hits in 79 ABs. Yikes.

Thor to Angels. $21 Million. One year deal. Gotta love the Angels. He’s been hurt for two years. If he rebounds, they get one year and he leaves for a bigger multi year deal. OTOH, he could pitch 30 innings…..
My guess is this means Scherzer gets about 40 for one year or 70 for 2.

Congrats to Gabe Kapler, NL manager of the year.

I’m shocked there were two people who thought someone else deserved it more. I lol’d at the fact that AJ Hinch got three third place votes on the AL side.
On another note, Houston is keeping Verlander.

Based on the local sport TV/radio reaction to the 49ers MNF win, I can't decide if they'll win the Super Bowl or just merely make it there.

Verlander 25 million one year. Scherzer is smiling…..
Dusty should have been AL MOY.

So is Gausman.
Yeah, I mentioned Scherzer as he’s of similar age and without the recent TJ. (Although I still wonder if something was wrong game 6, besides a “tired arm”.)

Wow. Giants have done a nice job of clearing the books. Now it’s time to open the vault. Zaidi will use it wisely. Just don’t tie his hands.

Some free agents in whom Giants are interested:
Nick Castellanos, Chris Taylor and Marcus Semien (St. Mary's HS in Berkeley with 45 HRs). Put Semien at 3B. I'd pass on Kris Bryant...I don't know that he wants to be here anyway. Taylor will probably want to resign with Da Bums. Castellanos rejected an $18.4 million qualifying offer. He's 29.

Mark Canha? Maybe. Bellarmine, Cal, Oakland A's. Poor average (.231 but .344 OBP), led majors in HBP (27), some power (17 HRs), scored 93 runs. Made $7 mms. last year.

Taylor rejected QO. Give me Marte and Taylor. Semien probably too rich for their blood. Castellanos value goes up with universal DH. He’s a lousy OF. And, of course, job 1 is starting pitching.

Semien expensive and Longoria has one more year. When he's healthy, he's pretty good. Taylor too inconsistent. Great for a couple weeks and then big slump. I was hoping they would go after Marte last year; he would be the best. Castellanos will be very expensive, won't he? Re pitching, I expect Wood will be back but they will need two more legitimate starters. Gausmann will win a brobdingnagian K elsewhere. They may sign Descalfini but I wouldn't. Seems like he's always an injury waiting to happen.

A lot of players are streaky offensively. Taylor also brings excellent defense at several positions. And speed. An element the Giants need.

Small sample sizes can create an argument for any player being inconsistent. A look at Taylor's full season statistics over the last five years show a pretty consistent player:
OBP: 354, 331, 333, 366, 344
SLG: 496, 444, 462, 476, 438
2017-2021 his full season OPS+ ranged from 107 to 127.
During the same period Crawford ranged from 74 to 141. Brandon Belt from 97 to 160. Evan Longoria from 91 to 124. Buster Posey from 83 to 140.

Giants protect Ramos, Jelly and Rodriquez by elevating them to the 40 man. Release Jackson and send the injured Nunez back to the Mets.
