I’d like a further explanation on that……Actually, I do live in California but I could not have answered your questions about Prop 26 and 27. I don't watch much TV, and what little I do watch causes me to just ignore any commercials about propositions on the ballot. I am going to read the propositions and the "for" and "against" arguments, but the TV adds are so misleading in most cases I consider them worthless and don't listen. I realize I am not typical and that isn't the basis for my beliefs about advertising during NCAA football games.
Before you answer that, if you live in Calif answer these three questions: 1. What is Prop 27. 2. Who do the “Yes” folks say. It benefits 3. Besides Prop 26 name any other prop on the ballot….. (You will be able to answer this I’m sure. Most Californians can’t)
I do believe that some advertising is successful some of the time with some audiences. Clearly, we are all familiar with advertising campaigns that we watched and enjoyed watching. The Miller Lite commercials didn't make me buy much (any?) of their beer, but they were clever and interesting. However, they were not sandwiched between five or six other commercials that were none of the above. The ratio of commercials to product on NCAA broadcasting has become almost intolerably high. People simply tune out and don't watch. I think that producing an effective commercial that people will actually watch today is much harder. I also think that for every consensus successful advertising campaign there are "several" (4 or 5) that are not. However, since it is hard to measure "success" directly and since there is a perceived need to market your product it is difficult to ask the question "Do we need to do this?" and "Is this a good utilization of our budget given that we are saturating an already saturated advertising venue?" IOW I think that today most advertising is not effective but is continued because nobody knows what else to do.

Even watching Stanford football on TV is now an activity that requires only about 15% of my attention. There is so much crap mixed in between plays you really don't need to concentrate at all. Too bad, because the low information entropy it makes it much less enjoyable than it used to be.
