I was calling for prayers for McKee's health last spring. The guy is a big, serviceable, strong-armed, smart QB. He is not, repeat NOT, mobile to any notable degree. And you can bet money that the DC at U-Dub will iron-out the "brilliant" RPO wrinkle that had Trojans mesmerized as fast as Seattle's loudmouth fans start shouting "It's great to be a Husky!" on Saturday night. The last time I was at Husky Stadium for a game, it was cold and windy and the coffee machine broke down at the concession stand in the section where I was seated. There was a mini-riot. I had never seen anything like it. The Dawg fans were outraged - how can you not have a back-up system in place to serve coffee at a game in Seattle?

Anyway, has any team ever been more dominant over the first two weeks of an NFL season than the Buffalo Bills? The best NFC team also played last night in the Philadelphia Eagles. Jalen Hurts and Josh Allen are what Kyle Shanhan imagines Trey Lance to be but isn't. Both Allen and Hurts were pretty bad at the same “development “ stage of Lance.
In hindsight (always unfair, I admit) why the Niners felt the need to trade up to 3 to pick Lance is beyond me . (They arguably gave up more to move from 12 to 3 than the Broncos did to get Elway). At the time, I thought it was because he had overwhelming skills and had run a similar style offense, so at least that facet of the learning curve would be less onerous. He is a good strong runner. He has a rifle, no question. But he lacks NFL accuracy. Which is always the most important thing for an NFL QB. In other words- good not great skills. With upside.
Now everything I just said, could be (and was) said about Allen in the early stages of his career. He has become more accurate with a lot of work. And he now is right up there with Mahomes as the games best.
The upside hopefully is still there for Lance. But on a team that is a contender, you can’t afford patience. Perhaps Jones at 12 (or if they had to move up a spot or two and give up maybe a third) on this team with this offense would have been the better choice. (I’m not sold on Fields). They couldn’t make that trade to 3, however, and pick Jones. The howling was occurring at massive decibels when it was reported that Shanahan was going to pick Jones. Part of me wonders if Lynch talked him out of it.
I feel for Lance. He didn’t ask for this. Hopefully he recovers fully and reaches his potential. But it’s going to be an uphill battle.
Shanahan and Lynch have handled this poorly from Day 1. They got lucky with Garrapolo. Otherwise it would be 15 games with Sudfeld and Purdy. Or, perhaps coaxing Fitzpatrick out of retirement.
QB development is always a crap shoot. Look at Tua. Jury was out. I think he’s made sure of a favorable verdict. Also doesn’t hurt that they added pieces to the offense, including the incredible Tyreke Hill.
Finally hats off and a bow to Phogge, who certainly pegged this one.

The reactionary prisoners of the moment who can't seem to grasp that how a young player performs today is not how that player will perform tomorrow, were 100% convinced Aaron Banks was a bust simply because he didn't play in 2021 as a rookie 2nd round pick. The same types have also declared Trey Lance and Javon Kinlaw to be failures too. Kinlaw is looking very good so far this year, and now we have to wait even longer to see what Lance can do as he gains experience, but he can in no way be written off.

Funny how it's too early to critique Lance and Kinlaw (who has been critical of Kinlaw, btw) two games into their second season, yet it's perfectly acceptable to anoint two basically rookie guards after just two games against crappy opponents.

Performance is judged by the ability to do things. When a young player can't do them, it doesn't mean they won't be able to in the future as they gain experience, mature, and improve techniques. But when they have proven they can do them, it shows they can. Like once you ride a bike, you know how to ride one forever.
This isn't baseball. It's not like Burford and Banks are feasting on fastballs and pitchers will discover they can be neutralized with breaking balls. Burford and Banks demonstrate excellent movement and recognition skills. Maybe they aren't as good in pass protection as run blocking, but what they have put on video over the first two weeks run blocking demonstrates ability that isn't going to go away against better competition. They will only improve as they gain more experience with their line mates.
The Niners yield 2.6 YPC, the fewest in the NFL. Kinlaw is a big reason why this is the case.
