Though none of their three writers chose Stanford to win it all, two of them had us in the title game losing to South Carolina (the third one had South Carolina beating Texas in the finals).

All of them had us in the Final Four and all of them had Haley Jones on their First Team All-American teams with one also having Cameron Brink there too.

Two of them had Kiki Rice as their National Freshman of the Year.

I'm not in the camp that thinks SC is going to be unbeatable. They are talented and very well could repeat but I think if we stay healthy and take care of business with our home games (if we can beat SC and Tennessee). We could very well be the top seed and as we know matchups matter in the NCAA tourney. If our guards progress as the season goes along, I like our chances in the tourney. 

I think KiKi Rice will be given the reigns right away with a ton of playing time so she likely will put up big numbers.

A few coaches (including Tara) wanted the Pac12 to expand the number of conference games and other coaches were against due to wanting to scheduler easier games to boost their record prior to Pac12 play. I can guess which schools opt for that option.

Also, the SC series will continue after this season. Looks like we will go to SC next season. They will return the following year and play UCLA the same week as Stanford to make the cross country trek worthwhile.

Maybe as Card10Fan mentioned that South Carolina will also play UCLA in their next West Coast swing in the 2024-25 season, we can work with other Pac-12 teams to create a packaged deal to play both us and one or two of the other top Pac-12 teams on a road trip out west since Tara has a good relationship with other conference coaches and other teams in the Pac-12 are getting better. Just a thought.

In the meantime, these holiday tropical tournaments are more important for a non-conference SOS perspective; especially when our team is loaded, like it has been the last few years, we should try to schedule tournaments that had fields like last year's if we can (I am not sure how timing works and whether we are aware of who else has entered), rather than this season's where our best opponent will be FGCU.

Bosgana seems to have developed very well.  Maybe her style is just flashier but she seems to have a nose for the ball.  I think she deserves to be in the rotation but we are just so deep.  She is much more mobile than Demetre, for example.  It's going to be very hard to keep everybody happy in terms of playing time this year.  

I also liked what I saw of Prechtel.  This deep rotation lets her come in as a shooter first and a post second, and that fits her game.

This game was an eye-opener in some ways.  Granted, the competition was not the highest level, but we didn't really miss Agnes' defense in the rotation, for example.  I think the starting lineup was the right one, but maybe that was more dictated by matchups than anything else.

This should be a fun year!

The last two seasons, the Bahamas has had the best Thanksgiving tournaments (competition wise). This year at the Battle4Atlantis: Tennessee, UCLA, Louisville, Texas, Gonzaga, are the headliners amongst others. Last year was South Carolina and Uconn. I like our trips to Hawaii but I don't ever remember an extremely competitive 3 games of that caliber. We've played Baylor and North Carolina there before but generally the competition has not been great.

Of course, the cost of the charter isn't likely to be dependent on whether the first leg is flying west or east.   Also, it isn't clear to me how much of the cost is per mile, versus for the days rented.  This year, the cost per mile is likely to be way up.  It also isn't clear how much of that cost is based on the specific team.    The charter flight isn't going to be the only expense:  hotel rooms are expensive in the Stanford area (but at least they aren't sold out or at a ridiculous premium on football weekends).

Rice University WBB is playing St. Mary's and Pacific this week.  They're flying 2/3 as far, so their travel cost is going to be 2/3 as much (roughly).   I doubt Rice is getting even 1/4 of the TV revenue that South Carolina will be getting.  (And imagine what it is like for the University of Hawaii (any team), or Stanford Field Hockey, or (in coming years) USC/UCLA.)

Of course, the cost of the charter isn't likely to be dependent on whether the first leg is flying west or east.   Also, it isn't clear to me how much of the cost is per mile, versus for the days rented.  This year, the cost per mile is likely to be way up.  It also isn't clear how much of that cost is based on the specific team.    The charter flight isn't going to be the only expense:  hotel rooms are expensive in the Stanford area (but at least they aren't sold out or at a ridiculous premium on football weekends).

Rice University WBB is playing St. Mary's and Pacific this week.  They're flying 2/3 as far, so their travel cost is going to be 2/3 as much (roughly).   I doubt Rice is getting even 1/4 of the TV revenue that South Carolina will be getting.  (And imagine what it is like for the University of Hawaii (any team), or Stanford Field Hockey, or (in coming years) USC/UCLA.)

You'd think the PAC-12 & WCC coaches could get together (virtually) and come up with some coordinated schedule for these long distance opponents.  Ditto for the east coast coaches.


Has anyone added up the carbon footprint of US sports travel?  It must be quite large.

Good points all around. I also would note since Covid, chartering flights has become the norm for college basketball. We took a charter to Portland for Sundays game and I’m certain aside from the Bahamas trip, we chartered all other road trips with flights required last year. Chartering is more expensive than commercial flights but I’m sure once you’ve experienced chartering, it would be very hard to go back.  not to mention being able to fly back the same night after a game to help cut down on missing classes etc.

It's about money. South Carolina's charter alone to play at Stanford is six figure Staley quoted and they had to scrap and beg to get a 2nd game in the area. They will play 2 games while in California. Tara said west coast schools have to pay more for guarantee games  for teams to come out and play them because of location and travel costs.  

I presume Stanford and South Carolina (or their conferences) are getting good dollars for this trip from ESPN.
