24-12 in the 4th Q
Jump played all 40 minutes and only hit 3 threes, but scored 19. She is so solid. Perfect on free throws for the season 7-7.
Brink with 21 points, 17 rebounds, and 6 blocks in just 26 minutes on the court. She is clearly the MVP. Two of her 4 fouls were dumb and avoidable. If she can stay on the court, we can go deep in the NCAA tourney. If not, we are much weaker without her.

Cam was fabulous. 21 points, 17 rebounds, 6 blocks, played with brobdingnagian energy. Her best game of the season? But I'm concerned that there was so little offense from the bench. 59 of the card points came from 3 starters. I'm wondering if there was a long layoff effect affecting things here

The bench was 2-17 from the field. They were critical contributors on defense, but did not do much on the other end.

1. It's on the coaches to keep the team fit and ready to play with intensity after a substantial break.
2. Would SU have won if UT had had its best player playing? We may find out down the line.
3. The bench doesn't have anyone who can take it to the hoop with authority and finish or who can hit threes. The Cardinal looks like it's going to rely very heavily on the starting 5 come the Dance. Rotation could consist of 7 players.
4. Did today's performance look like that of a team that can beat SOuth Caroline? Not at all clear to me. Many careless turnovers toward the end today.
5. Most impressive player out there today: Hannah Jump. Great stroke. Disciplined.

Anyone have a recap from behind the bench or chalktalk? This was a tough game after a 2 week break. Remember, Tennessee was preseason top 4 team so they have a ton of talent. They just haven't put it all together but were expected to be a Final 4 contending team.
A win is a win. I think our team knows we didn't play our best. Need more scoring from the bench especially. Better FT shooting. Jump, Jones, and Brink were awesome.

Defensive adjustment:
Tara adjusted to slow down Jordan Horsten in the fourth quarter. Jones started the game on her and not only could she not defend her, she also picked up two quick fouls trying to do so. Emma-Nnopu was the only player who could really stay with her, and I think that was the key to holding Tennessee in check in the 4th quarter. Horsten was 3/10 in the second half. Toward the very end of the game Tara was subbing offense for defense--Lepolo for ball handling and Emma-Nnopu for defense. It has been a long time since I have seen that from Tara, and it seemed to work. On the other hand, it makes it clear that we are not a great defensive team this year, and Lepolo had to come out of the game when Tennessee subbed matchup problems in for her.
Offensive stagnation:
We knew, from the chalk talk, that Tennessee plays a close man defense and we were going to have to get some back door cuts to punish it, and we needed to score in transition. We did get a few, but not nearly enough--and Tennessee limited our transition points too. Scoring from the half court was difficult--it was frequently difficult to pass the ball inside, and we got some turnovers trying. Furthermore, Jump was closely guarded on the perimeter the whole time and rarely got an open look. We were most successful when someone drove on the basket and either scored or passed--no passes from the perimeter were going to work. As a result, we had only 14 assists on 27 made baskets.
Are we really so deep?
Katy said at one chalk talk that we were the deepest team in America, but in these tight games we play fewer players than our opponents. We had 7 players in double digit minutes, while Tennessee had 9. There was a similar pattern against South Carolina. Our bench scored only 6 points on 2/17 shooting.
Rebounding prowess:
Tennessee always hangs its hat on rebounding, and this was a point of emphasis for us. We convincingly outrebounded Tennessee. O-boards were especially helpful to us, we had 17 to their 14, and partly as a result we scored 42 points in the paint to Tennessee's 34. Basically, we out-Tennesseed Tennessee. Cam had 17 rebounds in 23 minutes of play. Jones had 13. Two double doubles.
Where are the screens for Jump?
Jump was 3-7 from three point range, but fortunately she was 4/5 from closer in, often being the recipient of a pass on a back door cut. But she was closely guarded at the perimeter, and we need a way of helping her get more regularly open.
Blockathon
Brink with 6 blocks. Only one of her fouls was caused by trying too aggressively for a block, I thought, and it was near the end of the game when she knew she had a foul go give. Without those 6 blocks we probably lose.
Spectacular Fourth.
It would be nice if we played that well the whole game, but a 24-12 fourth quarter was just what we needed. And it was Jones and Brink who supplied most of it.

Except for Hannah Jump, Stanford's best 3 point shooter comes off the bench - Prechtel (46%). Nivar (35%), Demetre (31%) and Bosgana (33%) also have shown that they can make 3s. Just not today.

While we lost 12 potential points at the FT line, we lost 45 potential points at the 3pt line and 44 inside the circle.
In Q4, we continued to not hit from 3 (and, btw, Jump's last 3pt should NOT have been shot even though she was wide open), but we were 7 of 9 inside the arc. Maybe that's because TN got desperate. Somehow we held them to only 12pts in Q4. No doubt part of that was Brink brinking the ball.
I guess Tara feels she has to gamble on Demetre getting experience, but offensively she wasn't there today. Wow, though, she was 2nd best on +/- because of her time in the 4th (during which she got 3 fouls).
It was not Lepolo's day. Only 1 minute in the 4th. 1A, 3TO.

Everyone was healthy although Betts had some sort of slight tweak that would be a game time decision. We also were told that over the break the team has had to practice both for Tennessee and Creighton since the two games are so close together, and that there could not be two more different teams. So not only were we rusty, we had a somewhat divided attention getting ready for today's game.

Strange sort of game. Three quarters of mostly mediocre defense and so so offense, and one last quarter where Brink and Jones dominated and we crushed them going away. I think using Emma-Nnopu on a player like Horston is a better use of her than against quick, smaller point guards. Emma-Nnopu is very tough and physical but not super quick. She can be a tough defender but I like it more when she is deployed against a 2 or a 3 who is not tiny and fast.
Brink had a fantastic game. those late blocks were great. Jones had a great game also, and ran the point very, very well in the4th quarter. This was I think Lepolo's worst game, the first where she looked a bit lost, a freshman game, if you will.
Rebounding was very good. Turnovers were not that great but at least not terrible. We did not turn them over enough. TN has been a TO machine in some games. Not today.
Not a great shooting day all around. Interesting that Demetre got so much time considering her shots were not falling. Her defense is looking better. I still wish we saw more of Betts and Nivar, and something from Bosgana. We are not getting enough from our very deep bench in these big games. That needs to change.
