This is the primary reason large businesses downtown have shuttered their stores. However, it is remains a world class city that attracts visitors from all over the world. In fact, tourism increased in 2022 (21.9 million) by 29% over 2021.
In an attempt to not cross our political commentary line, I will just say, there are forces in the media that would like to see SF fail but they are wrong. Those of us who live here know better.

I'm ok with Manea coming back. He had three bad outings and was made to sit in the corner. If they don't pay too much, he's way worth it. The International League isn't quite the hitter's league that the PCL is, scoring more than half a run less per game than the PCL. So it's a little more meaningful. Thinking that things will break next two weeks. Imanaga supposedly coming to US to meet with teams. Giants can’t have just Lee and Tom Murphy as their additions.

I think the Giants would like at least one top-level starting pitcher. Two weeks ago, Farhan said that the trade market for front line starting pitching had cooled considerably -- in other words, those teams want too much. So I'd be surprised if the Giants traded for a top starter, and I don't think they'll trade for an above-average starter. I think it's Snell or Imanaga. Maybe both.
As for Bellinger, the Giants already have their CF in Lee. Bellinger has played 1B -- a lot -- for the Cubs. He didn't hit well as a 1B. I think the Giants would like at least one top-level starting pitcher. Two weeks ago, Farhan said that the trade market for front line starting pitching had cooled considerably -- in other words, those teams want too much. So I'd be surprised if the Giants traded for a top starter, and I don't think they'll trade for an above-average starter. I think it's Snell or Imanaga. Maybe both.
As for Bellinger, the Giants already have their CF in Lee. Bellinger has played 1B -- a lot -- for the Cubs. He didn't hit well as a 1B. Since Chapman, Snell and Bellinger are represented by Boros, it may be late January before they sign. I like Imanaga over Snell. I have a feeling that Snell (regardless who signs him) will be this year’s “what were they thinking” signee.

I think the Giants have some serious young pitching talent. Hopefully Bryan Price (local out of Mt. Tam High and UC Berkeley) can develop the talent. This is his fifth pitching coach role. He was USA Today's Pitching coach of the year in 2001 with the Mariners, he was the Major League Coach of the year in 2007 after the Diamondbacks pitched well. This is his second time following a Gabe Kapler firing...Girardi named him pitching coach for the Phillies in 2020 after Kapler went 81-81 in 2019. The Phils went 28-32 the next season and their ERA ballooned from 4.53 to 5.14 when the Phillies finished 27th of 30 MLB teams. Price then retired, and came back as a senior advisor to the Padres for the last two years. They improved marginally from 14th to 11th in MLB from 4.37 to 3.81 ERA, then improved slightly to 3.73, which was 2nd in MLB. Pretty impressive. Hopefully Price will crush it with the young talent.
As for Pat Burrell, the new co-hitting coach, who was responsible for minor league hitting...SFG's minor league affiliates improved their hitting considerably from 2022 to 2023, from a .733 OPS to .754. The other co-hitting coach, Justin Viele, joined in 2020. The Giants went from 28th in runs scored to 8th, 6th, 11th and then dumped to 24th. As much as I'd like to see an SCU alum succeed, I'm very concerned that the 24th finish is what this team is capable of versus the 8th or 6th.
I think Matt WIlliams went through similar tribulations as did Casey Schmitt. Maybe he can unlock greatness there.

Spotrac is estimating the Giants 2024 payroll for Competitive Balance Tax purposes at $185 mms. with a salary cap of $237 mms. leaving $52 mms. for incoming free agents or trades. Next year, Conforto ($18 mms.), Stripling ($15 mms.), DeSclafani ($12 mms.), Cobb ($10 mms.), Jackson ($6.5 mms., club has a $7 mms. option), Flores ($6.5 mms., he has a $3.5 mms. option which he is unlikely to exercise assuming a halfway decent year), and Slater ($4 mms.) all conclude contracts, so a grand total of $72 million comes off the books next year.
I'm assuming Haniger (.631 OPS, only 61 games played) will have a mediocre year and decide to exercise his $17.5 million option. His OPS+ was 73, and his numbers have shown a sharp decline. Two years ago, he hit 39 HRs. maybe he bounces back. I doubt it. What was bizarre to me is that Haniger's a righty, and did reasonably well against LHPs, but 74% of his ABs were against RHPs, where his OPS was 106 points less, which was typical for his career.
And possibly another $8 million comes off the books, depending on what the Giants do with Yastrzemski. Yaz had a great year when he broke into the majors at age 28 with the Giants (.852 OPS), then an incredible year in the COVID year (.968, led the league in triples, #8 in MVP voting). The last three years have been .768, .697 (played 148 games) and .775 (down to 106 games,). Still, he absolutely crushes RHPs (.831 OPS) and is helpless against LHPs (.592 OPS). He turns 34 in August. Assuming standard age-related decline, this might be his last year as a Giant.
Lastly on Blake Snell...supposedly it's down to the Angels and Giants. The Giants had a better record last year by six wins and seem to be moving in a more positive direction (Angels lost Ohtani, Giants gained Lee, with more to come). Oracle is much, much more of a pitcher's park. Baseball Savant lists Angels park as #13 for hitters, Oracle is listed as #26. It would seem to me that the Giants would be more attractive to Snell (and perhaps less so for Bellinger, who is likely to re-sign with the Cubs or the Blue Jays).
