I am surprised by our #5 ranking, but am optimistic about this team.  Last Saturday's practice with some scrimmaging and then talking with several of the players at the BBQ made more excited for the nationally televised labor day tourney in Milwaukee against Minnesota and Wisconsin.  I agree with Bobbk that Andrew looked good, particularly blocking.  We should have a good starting middle with Francis & Andrew, and depth with with our ND transfer Charity McDowell and Tim Duncan's daughter Sidney Duncan.  We have an incredible core returning with Miner & Oglivie, both potential All-Americans, as well as 2 year starter and likely go-to pin this year, Elia Rubin.  Yes, we lost Kipp and Baird, but we 3 second year OH/OPP (yes Kurt was red-shirted), Ipar Kurt, Jordyn Harvey and Julia Blyashov, who were all top recruits with incredible promise who spent a year practicing against Kipp, Baird and Rubin.  Whether we end up a Final Four team or a top 15 team depends on how quickly those women develop.  Hambley's OOC schedule guarantees both a very high RPI for tourney seeding and a chance to see these newcomers strengths and weaknesses with plenty of time to get better.  I hope, and truly think is more likely than not, that come tourney time this team will be better than last year's squad.  I particularly think that could be true in terms of playing under pressure with full intensity in must win post season matches, something the last two years squads have not shown in the elite 8.

I agree paloalto.  IMO, like yours, we are ranked too high and should be closer to 10-15 range preseason which would could improve upon as we develop.  I also agree we might start slow with at least 3 first time starters (perhaps more if don't have 3 6-rotation players, but use a defensive specialist or two now they we have some).  I hope and expect to be a much better team in November as the starting line-up settles and everyone gets experience working together.

I don't think you understand the depth of Wisconsin and what they bring in:  

      Fifth year OH Sarah Franklin who is probably the hardest hitter in college volleyball. 

      6'7" Carter Booth and fifth year Devyn Robinson at MB, arguably the best MB combo in DI volleyball.    

      6'9" senior Anna Smrek at right side.  

      Julia Orzol, one of the best liberos and all around players in the country.  

      They bring in Charlie Fuerbinger who some call a generational setter.

I will be very happy if Stanford plays a competitive match and ecstatic if Stanford takes a set.  We shall see next Monday.

While Wisconsin appeared physically imposing with their length, they did not look impressive at all. Their second outside hitter is a hot mess. However, their ceiling is high, and I expect them to improve as the season progresses. I still expect them to beat Stanford but I would not be surprised if Stanford wins. I hope Stanford wins.

I agree cardfan77 Wisconsin did not look all that good.  Here's my view.  When a WVB team plays the first game on the road against a good team they take a risk things can go awry.  Plus Orzol is nursing an injury and Franklin, last season's NPOY, is not 100% healthy.   In contrast Louisville passed well for the first match of the season.

I expect Wisconsin will have a better showing against Stanford.  The game is on Fox Labor Day Monday at 2:00 pm Pacific.   I hope it's competitive.  After Friday's game it should be a little clearer how well the Cardinal team has put things together..

The University of Wisconsin system looks like it has 25 campuses (more than I expected.) 13 of them are "comprehensive" and the other 12 are two-year branch campuses, so like community colleges.  Milwaukee appears to be the only campus other than the flagship in Madison to have R1 status from the Carnegie Classifications people.

Stanford at Milwaukee today 4:00pm Pacific on ESPN+.  I believe this is a branch campus of University of Wisconsin.  Acceptance rate 86%; graduation rate 45%.

Milwaukee was 21-12 last year.  They have seven front row players 6'0" or taller on the roster.
