Agreed. I'm a big fan of Kyle's, basically man-crush levels for him as a coach, lol. But that was ugly. Never made any adjustments to fix the blitzing of Okorie. And how many times did Rohosy get the pass on the high pick and roll and not look to his left to pass to Thompson or Gealer (our best 3 pt shooter) standing by himself on the wing. Once or twice, that's on AJ, after that it became a coaching issue. "Hey, AJ, they're leaving the left wing open, make sure you look that direction."

Yep.  I like the direction of the program overall under Smith.  But, boy, some of these games are just head scratchers.  

Fingers crossed that next year, with a bunch of Smith's own (highly ranked) recruits,  things start looking up.

Hate to say it, but Pitt wanted it more.  The interior and help side defense for us was non existent.   Needed to set higher screens for Okorie, as the commentators stated multiple times.   Refs were not kind and turned it into rugby.  Sure wish Benny had recognized that they weren't calling fouls and hence he needed to d-up on that last drive by Minor.  He gifted him the layup and the put back. 

Love this team and hate this loss.  Ugh....what might have been at The Dance.

Benny gave up both offensive rebounds on last possession. Missed three and he didn’t box out then didn’t box out on the drive. Sigh. Sad way to end his career.

Next year's recruits are 6'7", 6'2", 6'4" and 6'2". As today's game demonstrated, Stanford is soft in the middle especially without Okpara. Coach Smith is going to have to look for the beef he needs through the transfer portal.

I think that Giltay has a ton of potential.  Excited to see what he can do next year (assuming he returns--it's always a coin flip now).

Plus Benny made three second half baskets at NC State over the weekend, all of them as the shot clock expired. For a former walk on, he has done quite well. 155 career made threes, mostly in the past two seasons, which is top 15 all time for LSJU M BB, and his career 3-point shooting percentage is top 10 all time among LSJU MBB players with over 150 made threes. One of the best deep shooters in program history!

Part of me hopes LSJU gets an NIT bid, and gets a home game, and gets to host USC (currently 18-13). USC abandoned the Pac12 conference which led to its demise, which in turn led LSJU to the ACC and its absurdly biased MBB officiating. Karma works its ways and USC has had next to no success in any sport since fleeing the Pac12, other than their water polo teams. Their star M BB player, age 26 and on his fifth college team, suddenly left the game mid-game last week, and went up in the stands and sat with fans, a truly bizarre scene, a la Antonio Brown. Only at USC. Would be really nice to extinguish their MBB season!

That's a shame. Hopefully they keep Okorie (although if he wants to resurrect a certain team in Atlanta....) and Smith is better than just another NIT coach when all is said and done. I'll latch onto the Hoos for a run and maybe Queens College. (Can't bring myself to care about the Not In Tournament tournament.)

Someone said that this might be the first time Stanford wasn't in a bowl game, M or W NCAA Tournament, or College World Series since the '70s. Hard to prove a negative, but I find that hard to believe. 

If we are going to destroy the world with data centers, might as well use them. The list since 1970 is neither long nor short. (Took Copilot some time and Python - so much cross referencing and it had a hard time deciding what a 'year' is since academic years cover two distinct calendar years. Better than me doing it, anyway.)

1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1979, 1980, 1983, 1985, 2019, 2024

So five times since the 70s or 4 times if you count decades one to ten instead of zero to nine.

But if the larger point is that Stanford sports ain't what they used to be; it seems so. Stanford was crushing it from 1986 through 2018. That isn't a surprise given WBB dominance, and long stretches of strong performances in football, MBB, and baseball. The quad years (all 4 of the power sports reaching post season) are 1996, 1999, and 2001. That's the sum total. Alright, it has been a while.

Didn't get to see the game, but I suppose maybe that's a blessing.

I found myself not at all worked up heading into today, as the conference tourneys have teams playing with such wildly uneven motivation that it's hardly an honest way to separate those on the bubble. 

Today, two teams had all the motivation in the world, and the lead changed nine times in the second half. Maybe Stanford didn't play its best, but the guys showed some resilience after being down. 

In the end, maybe Stanford just isn't good enough to go on a five game winning streak. Maybe the ACC is only deserving of eight bids, though I'm told that number is not supposed to be a factor for the committee. 

No reason for this Stanford team in particular to hang their heads, imo, and if this was Okorie's last game in a Stanford uniform I wish him well in whatever he does next.

Wait, what? Prior to last year, the last time the WBB team didn't make the tournament was 1987. AI failed here. :-) 2019, which I guess is 2019-2020, was the covid year in which no tournament was held. (I guess you could say WBB failed to make the tournament since there wasn't one, but, umm, not really.) And 2024 is 2024-2025 season.

3 out of the 4 years I attended Stanford are represented in that list.

I was thining Okorie might hit the portal, but it doesn't open until after the end of the NCAA tournament. Unless Okorie is going to the NBA and concerned about injury, I agree it's likely he'll suit up again for Stanford.

But it's not 100%, either. Seems like every year more than a half-dozen schools turn down the NIT. 

BTW, did anyone catch this quote from Kyle Smith? "I'd be shocked if we're not in." No, he wasn't talking about the NIT. 

At the end of the day, it's a decision to play in the NIT, and not every team sees it as a reward.
