Brink with 25 points and 12 rebounds so far.  She is carrying the team.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - triangle2 - 11-22-2023

57-48 with 6:34 to go in the 4th.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - martyup - 11-22-2023

Worst announcers ever.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - 81alum - 11-22-2023

Bogana, Demetre, and Ogden all had useful points in the first half and I believe they have no points in the second.  Brink has been terrific but we are becoming one dimensional.  Jump sitting at 1-10 and reluctant to shoot now.  I think maybe all of Iriafen's points were in the first half too.  We need people not named Brink to score.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - martyup - 11-22-2023

We lead 59-53 with 4:34 to play.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - JTM - 11-22-2023

Where's Kiki?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - OCcardinal - 11-22-2023

Shooting 32% but a +13 rebounding margin (+12 OR).  Brink closing in on 30 points and 15 rebounds. 9-10 on FTs.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - 81alum - 11-22-2023

And just like that, Tara takes Brink out briefly and Iriafen scores.  Then treys by Lepolo and Jump open up the margin.

I've heard worse, but they certainly said a bunch of dumb things while rooting hard for Belmont.

RE: WBB: Stanford 74 Belmont 55 - CompSci87 - 11-22-2023

I'm glad a couple of players hit 3s late. Not to pad the score, but so that hopefully it carries over to the next game on this court.

RE: WBB: Stanford 74 Belmont 55 - OCcardinal - 11-22-2023

15-2 run to end the game made this look a lot less close than it was.  Brink finishes with 27 points and 16 rebounds.  Had a couple of very nice assists at the end, which made me less sad that she didn't hit a new career high of 30. Finished with a 38 Efficiency score. That's Aliyah Boston territory (in about 10 fewer minutes).

RE: WBB: Stanford 74 Belmont 55 - martyup - 11-22-2023

Final score doesn't reflect how close this game was and how poorly Stanford played.  It must have been a low after the thrilling win over Duke, but we've got to play better than this to have any hopes for a championship run.

RE: WBB: Stanford 74 Belmont 55 - BosCard - 11-22-2023

Defense was better in the second half.  Belmont seemed tired.  Lots of late shot clock contested jumpers.

The pattern is now clear: Brink, Iriakin, sometimes (e.g., against ND) Jump, and a few points contributed by three or four others, two starters and two second teamers. I repeat: Stanford is not deep. We have three reliable scorers against decent D, becoming one or two against great D. Let's see what happens against FSU. Can't rely on Brink to bail us out every game. Others have to step up. Will they? The jury is still out but a consensus is emerging.

RE: WBB: Stanford 74 Belmont 55 - CompSci87 - 11-22-2023

It would have felt a lot different if we'd been hitting 3s at a normal clip. As it was, it was tough to watch.

I agree Belmont looked tired and ready for it to be over towards the end, after having put out a great effort through the first 3 quarters plus.

RE: WBB: Stanford 74 Belmont 55 - 81alum - 11-22-2023

Tara's strategy to run Belmont ragged worked.  By the fourth quarter Belmont was obviously tired, unable to sustain its close defense, missing shots, and we went from a 1 point lead at the half to a 19 point win.

Brink played almost all the second half after sitting almost all the first half, and obviously our offense AND our defense are much better with her in the game.  27 points and 16 rebounds, mostly in the 2nd half.  Zounds.

Jump finished strong with two made threes, making her inexplicably miserable start fade a bit.  Iriafen finished with 14 points and 9 rebounds.  She started very hot and kept us in the game when Brink was sitting.

Interesting that Harriel seems to be the back up point guard at this point.  Clardy may be coming along.

Ogden, quietly, did a very good job.  Only 16 minutes but she led the team with assists at 4, and added 7 points, 4 rebounds, and a steal.

Was glad to see Lepolo finally knock down a three.  Can't accuse her of not being sufficiently aggressive this time--she took 5 shots.  But sadly only made one.

Nice to see Demetre's shot coming back, tonight 2/4 from three.

Now, time to move on to Florida State, which looked superb and is rising in the rankings.  I will post a preview later.

RE: WBB: Stanford 74 Belmont 55 - Spiny_Norman - 11-22-2023

I listened to the Stanford audio stream and thought that Kevin Danna and Jeanette Pohlen did just fine calling the game.

A question for those who watched the game - how was Stanford usually defending the high ball screen? Switching? Going under the screen? Sounds like Belmont did a good job of taking advantage of mismatches when Stanford switched with Lepolo or another guard trying to defend a bigger player in the lane. I recall watching Lepolo going under the screen against Duke with the Blue Devils then taking (and making) 3s. If possible, I would like to see Stanford's guards be quick and strong enough to fight through the screen and stay with the ball handler. But then maybe the opponent gets a step on the Stanford defender and drives to the basket.

I am not sure what the right approach should be. Maybe someone here can ask at the next chalk talk about how Stanford wants to defend the high ball screen.

Yes, we did a lot of switching, and on a few occasions we had gross mismatches in the paint, such as with Lepolo on their tallest player, etc.  I'd say 6-10 points during the game probably came off of those mismatches.  On a couple of different occasions the paint was left completely open as we guarded the perimeter and they took advantage by leaking someone inside.

Credit Belmont, they had a good game plan and executed it well.

I agree.

I didn't buy FloHoops and I missed most of this workday day game even by audio.  One of the live stats that shows a problem with stats is the "Stop %: Stop Percentage estimates the rate of defensive possessions where the opposing team did not score"
For Brink, her Stop Percentage was 133.3% (shades of 1972).

I recall seeing fouls called as guards tried to go over the screen. The players are forced to adapt to the officials and the shooting. Monday morning reviews need to allow for that.
