A win is a win. I think our team knows we didn't play our best. Need more scoring from the bench especially. Better FT shooting. Jump, Jones, and Brink were awesome.

Who is the leader on the floor who "demands" that the team step it up  and play its best?

I don't see anyone out there who has taken the responsibility to do that, the "team captain/leader" if you will.

RE: WBB: Stanford 77 -- Tennessee 70 - M T - 12-18-2022

Starters' +/- per 40 minutes through this game:
Lepolo  30.1
Brink  37.2
Jones  27.4
Jump 30.6
Iriafen  26.0

Jones is improving.

I think Brink clearly leads by example. When she was on the floor, we were very good in the fourth. I thought Jones and Jump also led by their play when it was needed. If you are talking vocal leader, I was not at the game today so I don't know who was leading huddles, keeping the team together etc.

I thought we might try some different defenses to mix things up in the second half. We literally played one possession of full court defense/trapping and Tennessee made a 3 pointer and that was the end of that.  I think we could be a decent zone team. Tennessee is not gonna light it up from distance but that didn't happen either. Changes defense to ignite your offense. We needed that to happen in the dreadful third quarter.

Creighton is the ultimate 3 point shooting team so we will need to guard the perimeter well to beat them.

Interesting reading VolNation; complaining refs were protecting Brink. Calling her a punk

Wrong. Cam only played 26 minutes. I know she had a 33 efficiency score today, but if there's one thing I've learned from this board, our team is going to lose every tough game where Cam doesn't play more than 30 minutes.  ;)

She only played 24 minutes against South Carolina, so she needs to play more than 25 minutes :)

Hahahahahahahahahahah...!!!

Lost track of the number of times Brink got slapped in the face and the whistles were silent. And don't get me started on the chokeholds!

Well, I agree with the announcers that we need her on the floor more.  When Brink went out in the 3rd quarter we promptly gave up a 10-0 run and fell behind by 8 points.  I don't think those two events were unrelated.

When she came back in at the end of the third (and stayed to the end), we outscored Tennessee 33-18.

So, speculation on my part, but I believe that if she had been in the game as much as Jump or Jones this game never would have been in doubt, we would probably not have trailed in the 2nd half, and we would likely have won by 20ish points.  With her in the game for significantly more minutes, we would probably have beaten South Carolina.  And in the NCAAs last spring, if Brink had not been in foul trouble we would likely have beaten UConn.

I'm not saying that 25 minutes is insufficient to win a lot of games, nor am I saying we can't win using other players to fill in.  But a 35 minute Brink would make all our games easier and might be decisive against the top competition.  At a minimum, it would have helped me to preserve my nails during the 3rd quarter by reducing my anxiety.

That is on Cameron.  She committed two silly fouls today that bought her bench time.  If she wants her team to win another championship, she will need to play with more discipline.

RE: WBB: Stanford 77 -- Tennessee 70 - qwerty49 - 12-18-2022

I had it on DVR and just finished watching.  Wow that was painful, but the first half of the 4th Q with the Cam and Haley show was some of the best we've played all year.

Yes, missed FTs, ugh.

Yes, Cam can't stay on the floor, double ugh.

And we can't set screens for Hannah but she played a nice all around game.

I'm beginning to think Prechtel should take some minutes from Iriafen.

I'm sure Tara saw the difference when we "went big" in the 4th Q with Haley bringing the ball up and Agnes in for Lepolo.  Demetre seemed to be fighting hard for the ball, even though she had a terrible shooting day.

I'm not convinced we are a solid Final Four team yet.  Our depth is deceptive.  Not all the pieces are in place just yet.

(12-18-2022, 04:43 PM)81alum Wrote:  Defensive adjustment:

Tara adjusted to slow down Jordan Horsten in the fourth quarter.  Jones started the game on her and not only could she not defend her, she also picked up two quick fouls trying to do so.  Emma-Nnopu was the only player who could really stay with her, and I think that was the key to holding Tennessee in check in the 4th quarter.  Horsten was 3/10 in the second half.  Toward the very end of the game Tara was subbing offense for  defense--Lepolo for ball handling and Emma-Nnopu for defense.  It has been a long time since I have seen that from Tara, and it seemed to work.  On the other hand, it makes it clear that we are not a great defensive team this year, and Lepolo had to come out of the game when Tennessee subbed matchup problems in for her.

Offensive stagnation:

We knew, from the chalk talk, that Tennessee plays a close man defense and we were going to have to get some back door cuts to punish it, and we needed to score in transition.   We did get a few, but not nearly enough--and Tennessee limited our transition points too.  Scoring from the half court was difficult--it was frequently difficult to pass the ball inside, and we got some turnovers trying.  Furthermore, Jump was closely guarded on the perimeter the whole time and rarely got an open look.  We were most successful when someone drove on the basket and either scored or passed--no passes from the perimeter were going to work.  As a result, we had only 14 assists on 27 made baskets.

Are we really so deep?

Katy said at one chalk talk that we were the deepest team in America, but in these tight games we play fewer players than our opponents.  We had 7 players in double digit minutes, while Tennessee had 9.  There was a similar pattern against South Carolina.  Our bench scored only 6 points on 2/17 shooting.

Rebounding prowess:

Tennessee always hangs its hat on rebounding, and this was a point of emphasis for us.  We convincingly outrebounded Tennessee.  O-boards were especially helpful to us, we had 17 to their 14, and partly as a result we scored 42 points in the paint to Tennessee's 34.  Basically, we out-Tennesseed Tennessee.  Cam had 17 rebounds in 23 minutes of play.  Jones had 13.  Two double doubles.

Where are the screens for Jump?

Jump was 3-7 from three point range, but fortunately she was 4/5 from closer in, often being the recipient of a pass on a back door cut.  But she was closely guarded at the perimeter, and we need a way of helping her get more regularly open.

Blockathon

Brink with 6 blocks.  Only one of her fouls was caused by trying too aggressively for a block, I thought, and it was near the end of the game when she knew she had a foul go give.  Without those 6 blocks we probably lose.

Spectacular Fourth.

It would be nice if we played that well the whole game, but a 24-12 fourth quarter was just what we needed.  And it was Jones and Brink who supplied most of it.

Have to correect you. We had 8 players in double digit minutes and almost a 9th. Fran had 9 mins. You said in your initial write up that TN was a deep team and you might have said as deep as us ( I can't recall). So if we matched them, don't understand your complaint about depthu.

RE: WBB: Stanford 77 -- Tennessee 70 - BobK - 12-19-2022

That was an Outstanding 4th qtr out scoring Tennessee 24-12. Tennessee has 5 losses to ten teams and the other to top 25 Gonzaga. With Jackson back they will be a load the rest of the year

Hmmm, well the ESPN boxscore and the official boxscore lists these Stanford players in double digit minutes:

1. Jump 40
2. Jones 39
3. Brink 26
4. Lepolo 20
5. Demetre 19
6. Emma-Nnopu 17
7. Iriafan 15

In addition, it lists Prechtel and Belibi at 9 minutes.  So I think I was accurate, although it is true that Prechtel and Belibi almost made it to double digits.  But maybe my concern is not well supported by minutes played.

Maybe a better way of looking at depth is bench points.

Stanford: 6
Tennessee: 27

Going back to the South Carolina game, bench points were:
Stanford 9
South Carolina 34

Now contrast these two games with Gonzaga and we get very different results with bench points:
Stanford 39
Gonzaga 2

In that game, Gonzaga had only 7 healthy players and we deliberately tried to run them into the ground by widely distributing our minutes (and point opportunities, clearly.)  But against South Carolina and against Tennesee our rotation became more restricted, apparently due to perceived matchup problems.

I guess I am curious as to why our bench is not able to be more productive against teams with elite athletes--whether our bench players get too few minutes to be productive or whether it is their lack of productivity that earns them fewer minutes.  Or maybe neither--perhaps it is based on defensive matchups that keep them out of games against certain kinds of teams.  After all, Emma-Nnopu got a LOT more time against Tennessee than she did against South Carolina (17 vs. 4) as did Demetre (19 vs. 3) and neither of them were productive offensively.

To this very untrained eye, I was impressed by Demetre's defense especially inside the key.

I agree.  Both Demetre and Emma-Nnopu were in the Tennessee game for significant minutes for their defense.  We know Demetre is capable of great offense too, although she did not show it yesterday.

Tara has always been willing to put 1 or 2 players on the floor as defensive specialists.  Of course it is great when those defensive specialists also are offensive threats!  Lacie Hull and Anna Wilson, for example, would occasionally have break out offensive games.

RE: WBB: Stanford 77 -- Tennessee 70 - CompSci87 - 12-19-2022

Our depth doesn't so much mean that a lot of players get double digit minutes in every game. Sometimes it means that Tara can bring in players that match up well against the opponent, different combinations against different opponents.

RE: WBB: Stanford 77 -- Tennessee 70 - BobK - 12-19-2022

Demetre made some excellent passes into the paint which Tara commented on. That’s offense :)
