RE: Dave Clawson will be our next HC. Here's why. - Stanfordindians1again - 11-28-2022

Frost- no.  Not good enough for Stanford- period.
Bloomgren- No.  Personality clash and not a winning coach.
Mendenhall- too quirky and will take too long to get back on W ways.
Clawson- in the end he will stay w familiar WF.
Mason- see Frost.
Roman- sticking w pros.

The guy we need to get is Chris Peterson.  He will out recruit any of those guys.  IS a winner.  Has the personality and surrounds himself with great coordinators.  Good fit for his family.  We get him and in 3 years are winning the PAC.

Roman reminds me of Norm Chow. A good career assistant/OC, but the market may be telling him that they don't see him as a strong HC candidate.

Maybe, if he has the same fire that he had 15 years ago. BTW, Shaw did go 4-2 vs him.

Even though Clemson just gave him a 10 year contract extension, they might be getting tired of him after 15 years. His trend line is down lately, at least compared to what his teams accomplished from 2015-2020. At the very least, he ticks a lot of boxes - proven winner, program builder, big time recruiter.

It would certainly bring a new twist on the post win "C House" celebrations.

Well played, sir. Well played.

I've seen more names bandied about for this Stanford job in the last couple days than I think I ever remember seeing any time the job was open before. This might be the biggest name hire Stanford has ever made for any coach ever. Dennis Green was a known name.  Tyrone Willingham really wasn't.  Buddy Teevens was not really well known, but he did come from a wildly successful Florda offense that Stanford didn't have the personnel to run. Walt Harris is probably the biggest name Head Coach Stanford has made to date. Jim Harbaugh was the biggest name in terms of recognition, but was not established as a top Head Coach yet.

I continue to believe that if you remove your all-time winningest coach, you don't hire an unknown person to replace them.

As an outsider, I think the most important things Stanford needs in a Head Football Coach, in no particular order after #1:

1. Can make Stanford's higher standards a positive in recruiting
2. Is innovative; wants to push envelope everywhere (and I mean everywhere) in the program and on the field
3. Has integrity (an offer is an offer, won't negatively recruit)
4. Has an eye for talent, puts a premium on player development*
5. Will hold everyone accountable to a standard of performance
6. Is a great recruiter and salesman of the program to media, fans, alumni (puts butts in seats)

Notice I do not put a high priority on Xs and O's in the Head Coach. It's really more about having a plan, unimpeachable program values, developing culture, hiring the right people to execute, giving them what is needed to succeed on all fronts, and getting out of their way.

Basically, I think Stanford needs more of a CEO Head Coach than a coordinator with Head Coach responsibilities.

RE: Dave Clawson will be our next HC. Here's why. - DocSavage87 - 11-28-2022

Peterson should be the obvious 1st pick but not sure he'll do it. Read an article in Athletic about his soul searching and issues with how frenetic the college game is, even off season. I guess one could say Stanford recruiting is easier because we target far fewer players than Washington and probably have a higher get rate.

What about Tom Herman?  He didn't light it up at Texas but still had nothing but winning seasons both at Houston and Texas. Texas had a losing season year before he took over. Got fired due to high expectations at Texas. Went to high school and college in CA.

(2).  This is the attitude Coach JimHarbaugh brought which is why he reformed all the Program's player recruiting approaches, expectations of itself, & its perception by outsiders.

(6). 1 of the key criteria for the next Coach, in my opinion, is that this Coach needs to 'BigName enough & Charismatic enough' to win Recruiting Battles vs NotreDame & UCLA & USC for 4/5 star blue-chip recruits & a person charismatic enough to convince 4 & 5 star athletes to come to the Pac12 (after USC and UCLA leave for the Big10) ...and that is not Coach Clawson.

Stanford always thinks big.  There is no reason that philosophy shouldn't be applied to Football.

Always? Really? How about Haase and Maples Pavillion?

RE: Football coaches off the board - jacket3ree - 11-28-2022

Maybe. Maybe not. (If I go in now to check. Maybe. Or maybe not. Some speculation a condition of hiring Fritz was letting him coach in their title game and waiting on the announcement.*)

I'll spare all y'all the palace intrigue (we are apparently a broke version of Auburn), but Tech's coaching search is either the tightest no-leak ship ever run, or the worst. Speculation is rampant and GT message boards are an absolute treasure at the moment. A few cool heads among the age-o-phobes.  "My God, he has a losing record at Tulane!! And he's freaking 62! Is Batt(man) [new AD] insane?"  "Yeah, well if he's on Part B already, maybe we can get him cheaper." (Guys, that's 65.....) Someone even organized a 'peaceful' protest against the hire in front of the athletic building. Geeze, people. Interesting that Geoff Collins - the defacto worst head coach in the history of bad head coaches - was so bad that when the interim head coach, who was Person 1b on the list of evil coaches who needed to be ridden out of ATL on a rail, managed to squeak out a couple of good road wins against ranked opponents, beat Duke (which is pretty decent this year), and kinda hung with UGA into the second half, is the fan favorite despite being part of the problem for the prior 3+ years (his OL was awful) and losing to bad UVA and Miami teams at home.

When I first saw Tulane, all I could think of was this better not be the next Buddy Teevens.

"David Shaw is available."  "No thanks. 2015 was a long time ago. Every three year period was worse than the three-year period before it."

If Ken N. hangs 'em up after the Army game, we'll have the coaching carousel trifecta.  My son's annual three-team over/under win parlay was set at 12.  Which is exactly where we sit with only Army-Navy on the docket. This might be the third year in a row he hits it dead on.

*The early signing period and portal have wreaked havoc on coaching changes, which are a month earlier than they used to be, it feels like.

RE: Dave Clawson will be our next HC. Here's why. - jacket3ree - 11-28-2022

Just don't look too hard at Clausen's record at Wake out of context. Took him seemingly forever for them to be anything notable.

I'd look at the coaches ousted from Whisky. Chryst or Leonhard.  Bully ball.  Maul people on offense and defense, but in warmer temperatures and non-hell like summer conditions. It worked before. I think it could still work. I wonder if DaMeco Ryans is willing to recruit and be the top guy? I bet he would come off great to recruits. Defense first! Vikings interviewed him for their head coaching job. Hope it was more than meeting the Rooney Rule.

Stanford seems willing to spend the money it takes if they were paying Coach Shaw $9 million. (Or $6 million or whatever.)

RE: Stanford Football moving on - winflop - 11-28-2022

Shaw was about as expected today. Muir was about as uninspirational as it gets. Went from one canned phrase to another. I wonder if someone on his staff was holding up big flashcards with what he was supposed to say.

I would be good with the coming of Chryst.  He seems to have the right stuff.

Horseshit. He probably believes it and that's part of the problem that put Stanford in the predicament it is now in. Totally relevant.

Well, the other thing is...there are a-holes and then there are a-holes. I think most of us can admit Harbs is often in the former group; it's not a problem. The question is what bucket Herman's in.

Over the last 36 hours Herman is the name I’m liking the most. I can see him come in and turn this program around.
