That pretty well sums it up. I walked out of Maples disappointed as hell but overall, elated. I did not think we would hang with SC because not much in our earlier games prepared us for playing a tough team.  I was wrong.  I did not think a freshman point guard could survive, much less thrive, against SC. I was wrong, Lepolo convinced me she can play with anyone and that is a brobdingnagian plus. Now if we can get one more PG from Agnes, Nivar or anyone not named Jones we will be set.  We only need 10 minutes of good backup guard play.   Prechtel showed me a lot. She played a whale of a game with tough defense and rebounding I had not seen before.  Haley will be fine and Brink will continue to be excellent, though foul prone.  So all in all, I am elated.  This .Stanford team has a real shot at the National Championship..I think they will get there.

My question is this: why does our team leave the floor before the national anthem and return only after it is concluded?  It is striking to see the other team standing respectfully while we are gone . PLEASE NOTE: I am not interested in arguing whether our reason for being absent is good, bad or indifferent. But I would like to know why we are absent and what has to. Hanger before we reappear .

I've been lurking, reading all the posts, and have not commented except briefly until now -- but I so like what's said here. It's just the way I feel, on virtually every point. There was much good in this game -- especially Lepolo proving herself, Cam's great play while on the floor, and Prechtel really making an impact. Stanford had a lot of room to grow and get stronger over the season, more so, I think than South Carolina -- and this makes me optimistic about taking it all at the end. 

As for the National Anthem, I don't know the team's specific reason for leaving, but I respect the fact that they do. For myself, a lot of the time I make a point of getting to my seat after the anthem is played, even though I'm already in Maples before that. My main reason is that I find so many of the renditions painful to listen to, especially those where the performer is offering his/her own special version. For me, the best ones are those the Stanford band does, or the simple recorded versions we sometimes get early in the season.

So what is your theory for why Jones sagged so far off of her mark?  Clearly it was a bad outcome.  I am trying to figure out if this was on Jones or on the coaches for instructing her to defend in a particular way.  Is there any chance this was a zone?  At the very least it seems a lot like a sagging man defense, which is one of our more common defenses.  I feel that if Jones had been instructed to closely defend her player that shot would not have happened, but that she was probably doing her assignment in a sagging man.  If so, she sagged about 6' too far.

1) when i watch the whole game video linked above - thanks! - at the 6 minute mark i see haley play exactly the same defense, standing midway between the shooter at the 3-point line and aliyah boston. the outside shooter passes in to boston, haley doubles, and boston travels. sometimes the defense worked, sometimes it didn't, but seems clear to me that that defense was called by the coaches, not an error by haley.

watch at 18 min. haley again is playing center field (4 players man, haley in zone). haley doubles boston, boston commits offense foul (elbow to the face, should have been a flagrant 2)

I would have to think we were lucky in the 2021 Final Four that SC missed easy shots with the clock winding down and unlucky that they made much more difficult ones this year.

They started doing this last year, and I asked anyone here for a theory and didn't get an answer.  So far I've not spent a chalk talk question on it.  I guess I am a bit afraid of the answer--if it is a Colin Kaepernick type thing I might respect that,  but I wouldn't want the team becoming the center of attention for the wrong reasons.  So for a year and a half I have not asked and they have not told. 

By the way, the Stanford Band DID play the national anthem on Sunday-and I love their version, always have.  We used to have many grade school choirs, Stanford soloists, and a variety of townies come by to perform, but so far this year it has been the same boring recording--until Sunday.  I was delighted to hear the Arthur P. Barnes version for the first time--ever in my memory--at a WBB game.

Having rewatched the game now, I think the issues of who did or did not defend the three point line is pretty moot.  It is clear that Tara had us play in a sagging man defense most of the game.  This makes a lot of sense, as Dawn herself acknowledged that South Carolina is not a particularly good three point shooting team, and since everyone knows they are an excellent rebounding team.

What does the sagging man do for us?  It allows us to do MUCH better on our rebounds, and to have many more opportunities to double up on the talented South Carolina post players, since all five of our players are closer to the paint.  It also tends to make it hard for guards to drive to the basket since we can make the paint so congested.

What does the sagging man do to hurt us?  Much like a zone, it makes us vulnerable to the three point shot.  Playing halfway may not give you enough time to close if you have someone with a quick release, and it also creates the possibility that you might foul a three point shooter by flying towards them while trying to close.

Both coaches alluded to this after the game, Tara's comment about the our defense having to "pick its poison" and Dawn's comment about her offense having to learn "to take what the defense gives you."

All in all, I think this was the right strategy--just as it was the right strategy for SC to play close man and not sagging man on a shooter like Hannah Jump.  It may also reflect Tara's concern that we don't have the same quickness for a tight man defense that the Hulls and Wilson gave us.  This may be our new base defense--sort of half way between a man and a zone.

However, I seriously doubt that we shall see a sagging man used against FGU on Friday.

i just skimmed through the video looking at the sidelines out of bounds plays. imo the 5-second call was a mess. the team appears to screen as if the ball will be coming from the baseline. for example, in a similar earlier play, the team lined up in their usual box around the key. haley was near-side, low post. she used her nearside high post screen to get free to receive the ball.

in that unfortunate last minute play, haley was sidelines throwing the ball in. hannah started in that same near-side, low post position but screened towards the basket instead of moving towards mid court.  talana was far-side, high post and screened towards the baseline, but kiki, far-side and low post did not use the screen of either talana or hannah to get free. we had no one using her available screen.

at the game i thought, well haley should have tossed the ball in and taken the 50% chance we would come down with the ball. looking at the replay, south carolina had position while we were screening. tossing the ball in would almost certainly have resulted in a live-ball turnover and easy basket for s carolina.

i was reminded that a few years ago, ros gold-onwude was calling a game and made a snarky comment to the effect of, "there's that box formation for the inbounds play again; tara only has one inbounds play."

I have to very respectfully disagree.  This is not a private expression. It is very public. I first noticed it at the Final Four in San Antonio but that’s because I only get to attend a few games in person and I don’t think team departure and arrival are covered on TV.

I do agree that each team member , just like each of us, has a right to a “quiet statement of conscience:without amplification”… but if no one knows what the statement is it’s a little like the old saw about a tree falling in the woods with no one present to ear the crash.  

I’ve followed Tara’s teams for more years than I like to admit and with very, very few exceptions the women who have played are not only marvelous basketball players but quite intelligent and thoughtful. This team is all that and more,  It’s a little hard for me to figure out why intelligent , thoughtful people make a statement that is unknown to anyone.

Don't see why that wasn't a flagrant. I've seen similar in countless games and they have been called flagrant. What WAS egregious was that the refs didn't even bother to take a look at it even if they would have ruled it a common foul.

Watching replay, I was even more impressed with Ashten. She wasn't perfect, but her blocks, rebounds, and points all came at key times and were impt. to our building/keeping a lead. Her stats don't do justice to the effect that she had the game - as well as keeping Boston from going off in the paint.

Nice analysis (by multiple people) about the three point defense.  It seems likely that we emphasized sagging off the shooters when they were out on the wing to make it harder to pound the ball inside.  And, for most of the game, it worked!  South Carolina was 5/17 from behind the 3-point arch.  In fact, prior to that shot, South Carolina was only 2/14 (14%) from three.  It is really hard to fault a defense that made a calculated gamble to sag and it paid off.

Of course, context matters, and a good strategy during the first 39 minutes and 43 seconds of the game was probably not the right strategy up by 4 points with under a minute to go.  At that point, you have to tell your players to defend the three tightly, and just make sure you don't foul.  If they beat you with an easy layup to bring it to within 2, that's ok.  It's hard to know where to put blame, but, I think, the fact that Prechtel, Jump, and Jones were all gave their shooters about the same amount of space suggests this was by design.  I'd love to know what the rationale was, or if it was just a brain fart.

PLEASE NOTE: I am not interested in arguing whether our reason for being absent is good, bad or indifferent. But I would like to know why we are absent and what has to. Hanger before we reappear .

They started doing this last year, and I asked anyone here for a theory and didn't get an answer.  So far I've not spent a chalk talk question on it.  I guess I am a bit afraid of the answer--if it is a Colin Kaepernick type thing I might respect that,  but I wouldn't want the team becoming the center of attention for the wrong reasons.  So for a year and a half I have not asked and they have not told.  

I would let it go without question or comment. It seems like a private, personal expression. I respect the team's right to make a quiet statement of conscience without amplification.
