Better starts, safe but not fast.
The first three had the fastest splits for their legs (not surprising since they are all world record holders in their events). Huske was 3rd fastest, behind Australia & China.
While all had really great swims, Smith & King would/might have won gold if they had done this in the individual events.
Except for a slow start in the individual event, Walsh was amazingly consistent ( total - RT = 54.81, 54.88, 54.82) at just off her world record pace.
Huske was about 0.5 slower than her fastest.
In the category of making up for a poor individual swim, I wanted to point out that 100 fly world record holder Caleb Dressel, who didn't make the semifinals with a 50.83 in the prelims, swam a great 100 fly in the medley relay 49.41 (0.19 RT), which with his prelim RT would have gotten gold in the 100 Fly finals (0.66+(49.41 - 0.19)=49.88), beating the winning 49.90.
(In today's swimming coverage on Peacock, the woman announcer hardly paid attention to the Americans. I surely missed Rowdy Gaines!)

I am not suggesting anything, but the article does mention one of the swimmers I previously mentioned as having an amazing improvement in the middle of this Olympics. Here's what that swimmer says about testing. (The "almost 200 tests [in 10 days]" and "5-7 testers[sic] per day" don't seem to add up.) It makes me wonder about reasons for that improvement.

The NY Times daily newsletter talked about some of the doping allegations against the Chinese, with some comments from Katie Ledecky.

I think China won only 2 swimming golds? both thanks to Pan Zhanle, their amazing world record setting freestyler who apparently was not part of the Tokyo doping. Wonder if he's been clean in Paris.
Meanwhile, Udodi, competing for Nigeria, did not have his best race in his 200m dash preliminary heat. He had one of the fastest reaction times at the start but his usual burst of speed off the turn seemed to be missing. He ran a 20.55, did not auto-qualify, and must try to make the semi-final via the "repechage" heat tomorrow. His lifetime best is 19.76.

Tree, Andrew Luck, and a number of Stanford Olympians, some with their medals! I can confirm that Andrew Luck is an amazing spokesperson for the University and athletic department--he worked the crowd, remembered details about people, and brought up the energy everywhere he went, including the end-of-night dance floor! The distinguished sponsor of the night was Jean-Etienne Amaury (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-%C3%89tienne_Amaury), MBA '07 who is the president of the Amaury Sports Organization, which (among other events) organizes the Tour de France. I did a quick scan of our medal winners and if you only count events like they do for countries (e.g., not counting two medals if there are two Stanford affiliates on a relay team) I get our current count as 7 gold, 7 silver, and 5 bronze so 19 total as a "country" which would be #9 ahead of The Netherlands with 17 and behind Italy with 25. We're also tied for #9 in gold medals with The Netherlands and Germany
