Someone with an anatomic or genetic predisposition to injury won't get injured if he is not involved in a play that generates sufficient force at the right angle to cause the injury. Other players who might be anatomically protected from injury can nonetheless become injured if trauma of sufficient force is brought to bear.
Unfortunately, we only really get to see the outcome: whether a player is injured or not. While an oft injured player may have a predisposition to it, that player may also just have bad luck. Hard to know what would have happened to, say, Costello, had he been involved in the same plays that injured Mills.

Mills initially injured his knee in a non football related incident and then re injured it when it buckled under him when he took a hard hit to his upper body. His latest injury does not appear to have been caused by anything specific. This makes me a little suspicious that there is some anatomic problem that just isn't going to go away.
