Are they still primarily in the Northern region, or is North slowing, and numbers elsewhere in the country are growing? Maybe the rate of growth is slowing, even as infections spread? The infection rate in some parts of the North of Italy are declining, rapidly in some places. To what degree the lockdown vs. "herd immunity" is responsible is naturally hard to say. Other places in the North are showing a slower rate of increase, but are still increasing. Rome and the South are in early days, but probably will be hit very hard. Many people from the North fled/returned to the South when things got bad in the North and before the lockdown. Undoubtedly lots of cases waiting to be symptomatic. Hopefully it will not be too bad, but it is not yet known. Take a look at http://www.italiatuttobene.it/ for the latest.
