The last few years have not been kind to Stanford athletics.
The public in the Bay Area could care less about the Olympic sports on the college level.
The public in the Bay Area could care less about college sports.
The national public doesn’t know that the Ted Cup exists.
The cheating scandal didn’t help. Cutting 11 sports in the way it was done really didn’t help.
Don’t know about the Merc’s circulation but the most important paper in the Bay Area pulled its beat reporters off Cal and Stanford and has always been a Cal paper anyway (since Bill Leiser died).
So to most sports fans around here Stanford is page 8.
It took a once in a lifetime bundle of energy to make it work at Stanford and it’s not going to happen again. Credit to Shaw for hanging on to Harballs magic for a few years.
Kids who think that they can play in the NFL watch TV and see full houses all Saturday long in Norman, Athens and Salt Lake. I would never have any visits to Stanford for a home football game.
Jonathan Smith is doing a great job in Corvallis but he couldn’t get the same kind of players he has admitted to Stanford. Troy Taylor could attract QB’s and WR’s with his offense but could they get in? If you got lucky and the next guy was successful he would be quickly poached.
Stanford can’t drop football because it would cause havoc in the PAC 12 and affect your Ted Cup sports.
IMO it boils down to one choice. Keep Shaw as CEO and force him to pick coordinators.
There is only one Jim Harbaugh and he’s not coming back.
I think Stanford football is screwed.
