Not sure it is wise to apply "western" notions of what benefit/cost is to Putin at this point. I agree with those who say he wants to bring NATO into the conflict and will keep crossing lines until it happens. The pain from economic sanctions may even embolden him to double down. It seems most people believe the Ukraine terrorism by Russia is a terrible thing happening that should be stopped, but don't understand how close we are to this thing spiraling out of control beyond Ukraine and becoming a true global disaster. Oh what a time to be alive.
