It is "best" not in terms of any profound psychological insights or theories about the man, but because Zygar actually talks to people in Putin's circle and has real information about his habits and contacts.

Nuclear deterrence depends upon the rational actor model.  A man who is increasingly detached from reality is not someone we want with a finger on the "end the world" button.
