It makes sense for Ukraine to fight in cities. There they can hide in buildings (ruined or not) and surprise Russian troops who can't see them coming. Much safer than fighting in the open. Artillery is still a problem but given lots of buildings, which one do the Russians target? Again, safer than digging trenches in the open (they know exactly where you are then). The trick is knowing when to leave. If you can win there, great. If not, you have to decide when it is "enough".
