A wild idea that might be worth considering - spin off the football program into a partially-owned corporation as suggested by this columnist re: UW football.

The players and coaches at Stanford Football Inc. would be employees. They would be accountable to the owners or a designated board for results, both financial and non-financial. The company would pay a fee to use the stadium and to license the university's trademarks. They would also pay an agreed percentage of revenues to help support the rest of the athletic program which would still be under university control.
Stanford Football Inc. would not be subject to NCAA rules but would be subject to the rules of whatever conference or other organization they belong to. And of course the players can still be students.
The world of college football is changing. It has outgrown the university. Time to consider another model.
