Now Stanford must have some NIL money but not enough that we have to compete with Phil Knight etc.  And I think this is something that we could do.  For example, I think a commercial or two with some Stanford players gaming out with NVIDIA products would be really cool.  Would that be gauche?  

Strictly speaking, I don't think Stanford University can have any NIL money. At least my understanding is that is supposed to be independent of the university. 

You will see some Stanford athletes making commercial endorsements for various stuff, and as far as I can see the institution will have no problem with that. What apparently Stanford could but won't do, is act as the broker for large-scale NIL arrangements to whole swathes of recruits. 

And of course, "Stanford" as in its universe of alums/supporters, could provide as much NIL money as anywhere. While Stanford alums and fans may be a smaller group than many Power 5 teams, as a group they are richer. Exactly how many would want to throw their money in that direction is unclear to me.
