The PAC-10 (without USC and UCLA) is a better conference than the Big-12 without Oklahoma and Texas, and with the addition (or dilution by) BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF. Only BYU really holds its own there.
The concern by the remaining Pac-10 teams is not the conference as it is currently constituted, but the concern that it is unstable and that teams might be ripe for the plucking. A Pac-8 without Oregon and Washington would fall apart.
