Both Allen and Hurts were pretty bad at the same “development “ stage of Lance.
In hindsight (always unfair, I admit) why the Niners felt the need to trade up to 3 to pick Lance is beyond me . (They arguably gave up more to move from 12 to 3 than the Broncos did to get Elway). At the time, I thought it was because he had overwhelming skills and had run a similar style offense, so at least that facet of the learning curve would be less onerous. He is a good strong runner. He has a rifle, no question. But he lacks NFL accuracy. Which is always the most important thing for an NFL QB. In other words- good not great skills. With upside.
Now everything I just said, could be (and was) said about Allen in the early stages of his career. He has become more accurate with a lot of work. And he now is right up there with Mahomes as the games best.
The upside hopefully is still there for Lance. But on a team that is a contender, you can’t afford patience. Perhaps Jones at 12 (or if they had to move up a spot or two and give up maybe a third) on this team with this offense would have been the better choice. (I’m not sold on Fields). They couldn’t make that trade to 3, however, and pick Jones. The howling was occurring at massive decibels when it was reported that Shanahan was going to pick Jones. Part of me wonders if Lynch talked him out of it.
I feel for Lance. He didn’t ask for this. Hopefully he recovers fully and reaches his potential. But it’s going to be an uphill battle.
Shanahan and Lynch have handled this poorly from Day 1. They got lucky with Garrapolo. Otherwise it would be 15 games with Sudfeld and Purdy. Or, perhaps coaxing Fitzpatrick out of retirement.
QB development is always a crap shoot. Look at Tua. Jury was out. I think he’s made sure of a favorable verdict. Also doesn’t hurt that they added pieces to the offense, including the incredible Tyreke Hill.
Finally hats off and a bow to Phogge, who certainly pegged this one.

Anyway, has any team ever been more dominant over the first two weeks of an NFL season than the Buffalo Bills? The best NFC team also played last night in the Philadelphia Eagles. Jalen Hurts and Josh Allen are what Kyle Shanhan imagines Trey Lance to be but isn't. Both are more physical and more dynamic, stronger, and smarter runners than Lance, and both are allowed to throw the ball more too.
