I'm not sure there has ever in a history been a turnaround like what some are imagining for Shaw. The closest all-time analogues are probably Bill Snyder, Joe Paterno, and Kirk Ferentz. I don't think any of them reached the depths of irrelevance we have though. At minimum, a turnaround would be an extreme historical rarity. Arguably it's unprecedented.

I think what Shawpologists must reckon with is that the decline is not just two of the last three years being bad. If you look out at the last four years or last five years it's not a good record. If you map records against talent, it's abjectly one of the three or four worst track records in America.

None of this is to discount the career achievements. But five years is not a short amount of time and the last five years are far more predictive of future performance than a more distant era.
