I said "mostly a deterrent" in my post.



But, I also know this is the first time in 80 years such a deployment has been made, and that was for war.  And I read/heard that NATO is becoming more open to taking action in Ukraine if Russia crosses certain behavior lines.  I don't remember where I saw/heard, because I read and heard many sources of information this am. This was the first time since the war started that I have heard anyone say NATO could get involved. I should have taken note of where it was, but had a headache this morning.

Romania is very concerned about events in Moldova. Moldova and Romania are historically linked and most residents speak Romanian. The Russian presence in Transnistria is problematic. This deployment is at least in part designed to keep Russia from getting Moldova and Romania in the Ukrainian war. There are two areas that could easily get NATO involved in a war, one is the Baltics and the other is Transnistria. The Baltics already have NATO troops present. Romania basically did not. Now they do. Obviously, it doesn't hurt to have US troops present in case "something happens". Note however this is an airbore division and therefore it lacks heavy weapons and armor. It isn't going to Kherson.
