In defense of Haley:
1. Sacrificing her game, possibly end season awards and WNBA draft stock and her best position (4) to play the 3 position because coaches have told her this is what is best for the team. She IS an All-American at the 4 spot, not 3 and sure as hell not the 1. And I think she is a better 4 than Kiki but Cam is emerging as the best 4 (not 5) of them all.
2. Tara gave Haley 1 minute rest in an OT handling at least 40% of ballhandling duties and much of it without another person on the floor that can get there own shot because Cam was in foul trouble. She was extraordinary in the Final Four in 2021 because she was in foul trouble and had significant rest in both the S.Carolina and Arizona games. It is neither normal nor healthy for players to play a full game plus OT without rest. Dawn used television timeouts and end of quarters to sneak in rest for her players she will need during winning time. Tara has never cared about this to my knowledge.
3. Related to #2, in the last decade the only starting point guard that wasn’t a significant scoring threat but was able to “set the table” for others to score on her team was Ty Harris in 2017. Ty is a WNBA player. But in even that case, the other guards on the floor contributed in the scoring column. Hannah is a great shooter but she has never been able to move without the ball effectively enough after the Sweet Sixteen to be much more than a valuable floor spacer for inside players. Caveat: I can’t find 2013 box scores but must assume Bria Hartley who was on the all-tourney team took much of Doty’s minutes. Kiana in 2021 was probably Stanford’s leading scorer going into the tourney and she didn’t play well because she was #1 on every scouting report to stop (luckily, Haley Jones, legitimate Stanford savior in the Final Fours in both 2021 and 2022 emerged).
Legitimately surprised to read the Haley takes given what she has done for this program and how she is sacrificing her game so Kiki can enter the starting lineup.
