When there are 16 seconds in the game, and you're 4 points up, the last thing you want to do is to give up a 3.  That gives the other team a good chance to beat you with any 2 or even tie with a single FT (technical foul?).  Give up a 2 if you must (no fouling).  Strategically, in that game situation, trying to avoid a theoretical 2pt shot by giving up an open 3pt shot is unwise.

Given the positions on the court, Jones had no way of getting to Boston if Boston dove toward the basket.  To double Boston would require Brink to leave her player and Jones to rotate in. 

The dribbler is on her half of the court.  Jones failed to contest her player from getting the ball.  The ball handler always had an easy pass to the shooter whenever she wanted.   Tick-tock, time is running out - why give them open passes whenever they want?
(The moment the pass is initiated, Jones is about 12' away from her player.)


An uncontested shot (ok, mostly uncontested: Jones was 6' away when the ball went up.).


Considering the theory that Jones should lay off the shooter:  Coming into the game, she was 5 of 11 (45%) for the year.

As for the missed FT, to me that's not an issue.  Even the best FT shooters miss some.  Thinking that players should *really* make their FT late in the game seems like thinking they should not be as good in FT throughout the game.

(Btw, I noticed Jones blocking out on a rebound in the 3rd quarter.)


By the way, Jump played the same number of minutes as Haley.  Lepolo also played more than 40 minutes.

Are you implying Hannah and Lepolo were effective in the 2nd half on little rest? I sure saw something very different. Lepolo was taken out in the 2nd quarter because she started turning over the ball due to fatigue, and ineffective in the 4th once S. Carolina loosened their defense on her and kept her in front of them (according to Dawn). Hannah couldn’t get separation to shoot, had 0 ballhandling duties and had the easiest defensive assignment. Neither Lepolo nor Hannah were capable of, nor expected, to go 1 on 1 and get their own shot the way Haley had to, while playing those minutes.

I agree with you re: Haley, I think she had a bad half/OT but people are laying way too much blame on her for what was collectively a team failure to retain a late-game lead. My only issue with Haley’s game is that she seems to try the crossing-under-the basket, behind the back layup way too often, and while she is clearly better at it than most (and it’s very hard to defend when well-executed), it’s not a high percentage shot to begin with. I would love to see her stop-and-pop more often.

Just look at the stats; Haley was 1/13 on field goals in the 2nd half, had a critical missed free throw late, and a critical turnover inbounding the ball late.  Let's call a spade a spade; her 2nd half performance was really really bad.  I still think she's a tremendous player and talent but this was one of the worst halves of basketball I've seen from her ever. So, i don't know why everyone wants to sugarcoat that and lessen the blame on her shoulders but her 2nd half stats are very telling themselves. I'm sure she was feeling the pressure but she's also a senior and leader on this team and we expect those leaders to rise to the challenge. It didn't happen. The season is not lost and our goals are all still ahead of us. But Haley needs to take this game and use it to better herself.

No one is sugarcoating anything. First half, she looked pro-ready to me. Second half, fatigue set in and Cam only playing 23 minutes meant she had to carry the team on her own. Haley has come through more often than she has not. They don’t call her “Tournament Haley” because she lays a lot of eggs in crucial games. She has been Stanford’s most consequential player in the last decade and deserves some grace given she changed positions this year.

Just stop already. Start your own Haley Jones fan club thread if you must.  We're not talking about who's the most consequential player the last decade for Stanford WBB. This is the SC game thread and Haley didn't have a good second half and it was quite obvious to any non-bias observer. I'm not putting the loss solely on her. Maybe she was fatigued but she didn't play well in the big moments of this big game. End of story. She's a tremendous player and I love watching her play. Yesterday wasn't her day. Move on already.
