My wife and I will be in Hawaii for the games as well. We are vets of the last Hawaii tourney when Anna Wilson suffered a pretty horrendous injury from getting decked by an over zealous opponent. She laid very still on the floor for over ten minutes and was hauled off to the hospital in an ambulance. It was toward the end of the game and the refs ended the game right there. So, holiday tournaments can also be pretty risky, taking an unexpected loss is not the worst thing that can happen.
In Victoria just before Covid closed down the country, our players ran into some pretty stiff opponents. Fingal got decked and limped off the court, only to come back and help win the game over Georgetown. Jump was just a freshman and saved us from certain defeat to Cal Baptist by raining threes from everywhere on the court. Still, Nadia edged her out for tourney MVP for her gutsy play.
These holiday tournaments can be great fun, if you can get out of the holiday family obligations.
And the Bahamas reminded us that the players can’t let up when playing an underdog — we came away with a defeat that year, which took an awful lot of Bahamian beer and Conch to erase.
