So what is your theory for why Jones sagged so far off of her mark?  Clearly it was a bad outcome.  I am trying to figure out if this was on Jones or on the coaches for instructing her to defend in a particular way.  Is there any chance this was a zone?  At the very least it seems a lot like a sagging man defense, which is one of our more common defenses.  I feel that if Jones had been instructed to closely defend her player that shot would not have happened, but that she was probably doing her assignment in a sagging man.  If so, she sagged about 6' too far.

1) when i watch the whole game video linked above - thanks! - at the 6 minute mark i see haley play exactly the same defense, standing midway between the shooter at the 3-point line and aliyah boston. the outside shooter passes in to boston, haley doubles, and boston travels. sometimes the defense worked, sometimes it didn't, but seems clear to me that that defense was called by the coaches, not an error by haley

2) as i watch that unfortunate last-minute made 3, i see haley standing just inside the 3-point line and the shooter making the shot from 4 feet behind the line. pretty common for a defense to guard the line and allow the steph curry shot. if you make it, more power to you.

I would have to think we were lucky in the 2021 Final Four that SC missed easy shots with the clock winding down and unlucky that they made much more difficult ones this year.
