Over the first nine games I have been very impressed by Talana Lepolo at PG but I have also been impressed with Jzaniya Harriel when she has played PG. I compared them as if they had each played 35 minutes per game. The results:


Lepolo 5.96 Pts; 2.61 rebounds; 8.0 assists; 1.41 steals; 1.41 TOs; 0 Blocks; 2.68 A/TO
Harriel 6.45 Pts; 5.99 rebounds; 4.61 assists; 1,84 steals; 1.84 TOs; 0.46 Blocks; 2.50 A/TO

They actually match up fairy evenly. Harriel is a better scorer and a much better rebounder. Lepolo is significantly better is assists, although her assist to turnover margin is only slightly better. Harriel is slightly better on steals and she has one block to none for Lepolo. But, statistics only go so far.


Watching them both play, I would say they both handle the ball well and they both push the pace well. Lepolo seems to have slighlty better court vision. Her weaknesses are a reluctance to shoot and she does not handle taller guards too well. Harriel is a willing shooter, perhaps too willing. If she played a lot I think she would hit about 1/3 of her threes. Lepolo might do as well if she would shoot. Harriel is a better defender and rebounder. They could both be very good players and the jury is still out on just how good they can be. Lepolo has played about three times as many minutes as Harriel and I would say that is not justified by the numbers. I would like to see both of them play half a game at PG until one significantly outperforms the other. Obviously, Tara sees it differently. I can only guess that Lepolo has better practices than Harriel. One could also include Nivar in the mix. She has played a little PG but not enough to really evaluate her at that position. If she played PG my guess is that she would be a good scorer and defender but have fewer assists than either Lepolo or Harriel and more turnovers. She is probably more of a 2 guard.

Interesting comparison re the stats, but I think you also have to take into account which players on the other team are on the court when Lepolo or Harriel is playing. Lepolo is there as the start of the game when the opponents are freshest and strongest, as all as all being starters. Harriel gets into the game later and is often facing subs from the other team, as well as people who may not be fresh while she is, coming right off the bench. Still, I agree that Harriel is showing that she's got possibilities. From being really concerned about our PG position, it's starting to look as if we have a bit of depth and options.
