As posted earlier in this thread, a lot of Big 10 cities have small airports and no non-stops from LAX. Fine for charters, but painful for commercial. On a good day, the connections will add at least a couple of hours to the trip if flying commercial. On a bad day, snow, ice, thunderstorms, etc. can wreak havoc. 

That's still not a significant difference. When you're on the road you're on the road. Whether you're going to play Oregon or Michigan a few hours don't matter that much, it's a business trip.

A few trips a year does not substantially change your on-campus experience.

LAX to BWI is 4 hr 50 min non-stop (6 hr on the way back due to the jetstream) while LAX to Eugene is 2 hr 20 min and LAX to PDX is 2 hr 30 min.  Moreover the 3 hour time zone difference means that the whole day is pretty much shot.
