Necessity is the mother of invention. And I wonder, in this war of choice for Russia, whether there is much incentive To challenge Putin and do something different.  If you are a mod-level commander in Donetsk, your goals are basically a) to survive and b) not to piss off your superior (and I recognize that these two may be in conflict).  So, I would imagine a lot of CYAing and a lot of trying not to upset the Apple cart, probably trying to avoid engagement, and very little innovation.
