After the shot clock expiration there were only 3.6 seconds left on the game clock, right? And after a shot clock violation the ball has to be inbounded, giving the defense a chance to set up. So I can see it's a reasonable strategy to take the violation, ensuring there isn't a defensive rebound and fast break off a missed shot.

Even if that was the general strategy, I bet Tara would have been okay if Kiki had taken and made the wide open layup with 2 seconds left on the shot clock, since a 5-point lead is a lot safer than 3. But that could have been a hard decision to make under pressure.

Hah!  And while USC has some quality players, they do not have a Jeanette Pohlen.  In fact, we do ;)  Do you suppose she said in the huddle: "Just make sure you leave them less than 4.4 seconds"?

Well... I love that memory as much as anyone. But it was from before you could advance the ball into the frontcourt with a timeout.
