They might as well get rid of all their draft picks except #1-#3, if they’re going to get this haul of comp selections, and a few in trade. They only have two original selections remaining:
Ten Projected 49ers 2023 NFL Draft picks:
ROUND, OVERALL PICK NUMBER, ORIGIN
3, #99, Comp (for Robert Saleh/Martin Mayhew)
3, #101, Comp (for Mike McDaniel)
3, #102, Comp (for Ran Carthon)
5, #157, From MIA in Jeff Wilson Jr. trade
5, #166, Original pick
5, #173, Comp (D.J. Jones departure)
6, #216, Comp (Arden Key departure)
7, #224, From DEN in Jonas Griffith trade
7, #249, Original pick
7, #255, Comp (K'Waun Williams departure)
With two more comp third round choices coming in 2024 (Carthon #2) and 2025 (Ryans).
That would mean at least 11 selections in the late April NFL draft. I wonder if they would use all 11. Is that too many to take on at once? Perhaps package a few to move up in the draft? I know that they have some serious, significant needs, on the OL, the DL and in the defensive backfield, and possibly at kicker.
The Niners have mastered the draft about as well as a team can. They have traded away first round picks that they couldn't really pay with their star studded roster., to get a QB they wanted. They have had a lot of success in the most important rounds of the draft (3-6). They have taken full advantage of the ethnic minority promotion rewards. They have made smart trades during the season that have sent picks out and brought them back in. They have accumulated so many picks that they can now trade up to get a player they really like at a position of need.
There is no way the Niners are drafting 11 players in the next draft. They absolutely will trade some of those picks, even if it means trading them for picks in the 2024 draft. They will not be trading into the first round, but could probably trade into the 2nd if they really want someone. There's room for what, maybe 3-4 draft picks to make the Niners roster this year?
