Before I disappear back into my cave for two more days, please allow me to add one observation that, hopefully and presumably, someone already made elsewhere:Mizzou, I made that point about Cam last night because despite my major disappointment over the loss, I saw such a positive in Brink that sotened the pain. She was a shining example of a competitor. I noted her FT shooting this season and especially down the stretch. I don't know if everyone appreciates just how difficult making so many FTs consecutively. I contend that anyone who is reasonably athletic - which most D1 players should be - can make at least 70% of their FTs. But not missing one over that many games is absolutely incredible. A player can just have a slight physical tweak that causes a miss, be a little bit tired especially at the end of games, and moreso, FT shooting is highly mental. The focus and concetration has to be there, but there can always be lots of pressure, e.g. Brink's two FTs to tie the game. I highlight this because it shows me two things about her - first, she has evidently worked really hard physically on the mechanics and practice, and second she is mentally tough and determined. Both those things reflect why she is an overall star and AA.
Cameron Brink is a warrior of the first order. She was obviously far less than her full self, as she doesn't miss at the basket the way she did yesterday. And she looked a shade of green. Think of how crappy and inefficient you are (or, at least, I am) when ill.
But she put it all out there. When I have to go to war, I'd love to have her at my side.
Gutsy efforts do not always lead to victory. But that doesn't make them any less gutsy. Fwliw, I feel mighty fortunate to be able to root for her.
Re Cam's free throws in the latter part of the season, she ended the season with at least 44 consecutive made free throws, going back to the ASU game on Feb 12 when she was 5/6. I don't know when the miss was in the game, so her consecutive could be anywhere from 44 to 49, depending on timing in ASU. Does anyone know what the Stanford record is for consecutive made free throws? This has to be close to it, or a new record. I do know that Pohlen was somewhere over 30 in 2010-11.
