South Africa's problems ultimately come down to energy production. Russia is the place to go for oil and gas exports. The US is a net exporter again, but at this point we're a follower, not a leader. With the Germans killing nuclear and going back to coal, and the need for the US to prioritize sending them natural gas, Russia is the natural place to turn for South Africa (and India....).
