It sounds like a good metaphor for what faces Shoigu is Sal Tessio (from The Godfather). Shoigu didn't set up a meeting to help kill the boss, but he is now going to be totally blamed for everything Ukraine invasion and is a dead man walking at least from a career perspective if this is true:

This is yet another reason Putin is finished. If you can't survive in your job by being loyal to the crime boss, that boss doesn't really have the power.
