Whomever the AD is over the next 3-5 years will likely oversee the dismantling of Stanford's varsity athletic program. A reduced media payment will mean big time cuts to the budget which will mean axing sports - lots of them.
As a point of comparison against another school that has a football team, UC Davis sponsors 9 men's and 15 women's sports. Fresno State sponsors 6 men's and 11 women's sports.
UC Irvine (without a football team) sponsor's 9 men's and 9 women's sports.
Stanford currently sponsors 16 men's and 20 women's sports. A number of those will have to go.
