FWIW, IF it doesn't cost them any money, I would bet most conferences would be glad to have Stanford's teams in their conference. Yes, Stanford might be a "hard out", but it would also validate said conference's legitimacy. WBB might be a problem. Too good for too long for some competitors to accept, but it is worth a try. The real question would be how much of a commitment Stanford would need to make to said conference. Nobody wants to be a "parking place until something better comes along". That, IMHO, is the main obstacle to joining a conference in everything but football.
