For a long time Ukraine fought to defend Bakhmut despite the fact it had no obvious strategic value. Kupiansk is a different story. Ukraine needs to keep Kupiansk, period. It is a critical link in the Russian GLOCs and Ukraine holding it really puts a hurt on Russia. Ukraine needs to keep it, come what may.
