The 49ers traded away a king's ransome to move up to the #3 overall spot to draft Trey Lance.  The Miami Dolphins have parlayed those picks into a very nice roster.  Think of how much better the 49ers could be if we had not traded away those picks.

Never has something so seemingly consequential for a team been less consequential in reality than the Trey Lance situation with the Niners. Here's a laundry list of reasons nobody should freak out and just let the situation continue playing out.

- First and foremost, the Niners got a starting QB with the last pick of the draft the year after Lance was drafted #3. It doesn't matter where someone is drafted if they turn out to be a good or even great player, or even if they are drafted.

- All teams have the same amount of money to spend and the same amount of draft picks to use. The whole picture is what matters, not perceived value of individual puzzle pieces.

- Trey Lance has had less than 500 snaps in actual games since 2018, he's way too raw and inexperienced to be judging his  worthiness as a player.

- This above point makes the news that he isn't #2 this year not the least bit surprising given they had a much more experienced Darnold on the roster too. Lance was given opportunity to beat Darnold out and didn't. Not a big deal, kinda expected.

- Everyone cries about the draft picks traded for Lance. OK, but does anyone think the Niners could afford to have the roster they have with two more first round picks on it?  They couldn't even afford a 2nd rd pick this year, let alone a first.

- Lance has to play to get better but the Niners are too good and have too many better options now. Would Niners fans rather have signed someone lesser than Darnold and have Lance be the backup because he was less worse than that guy? Don't think so. The objective is to strengthen the QB room and the Niners did exactly that.

- The fact is 2022 was the year Lance had to play. The Niners gave him an opportunity and he got hurt. It's not his fault, and more Shanahan's for running him like a RB, but that's just unfortunate for Lance that it happened.

- The Niners are serious Super Bowl contenders even having "wasted three first round picks on Lance." I'll take it.

All Trey Lance can do is continue working hard an be ready for his next opportunity. His value isn't high enough for a team to trade anything the Niners would covet for him, and he does have value as the best #3 QB in the NFL. It's just too bad there isn't a way for Niners to get Lance playing in some developmental league.
